washing machine hose and mini-stop valves

When I try to fit a washing machine hose onto a mini stop valve, why does the blue or red plastic handle always get impeded by the cap of the hose so you can't turn it fully on? Is it a common problem? Is there a better valve to use or a particular hose brand? Or is it just another bad british design?

I've never had a problem with them. Maybe the red/blue tap was fitted incorrectly in the first place ? A picture may help ?

Try removing the coloured plastic lever and rotating it 180 degrees.

This. Every appliance valve I've ever seen has had the valve handle over the compression joint when open.

  • Your handle has clearance with the blue nut. I would put an image in but the insert picture icon wants a URL rather than a pc location!!! How do you get a picture in?

You need to upload to an image hosting site first, then copy the link here, but as you're new user you'll have to remove the https://www bit

  • What a nightmare! Thanks anyway. In the meanwhile my blue handle binds on the blue nut and is mounted so the nut to unscrew it is awkwardly located. Guess some brands of hose/valve are better then.

^ Many valves are supplied with a blue and red lever to be fitted by the user. Presumably yours was fitted incorrectly.
  • No its like yours but either the blue nut extends much further towards the handle or the handle is longer and binds on it. Personally I haven't seen one that doesn't until I saw yours. Not that I've a lot of experience ...

It happens because many of the valves are cheap rubbish made down to a price.
    Two options:
    1. Use an additional rubber washer in the screw cap.
    2. Replace with a decent valve like a Pegler.

I have found that some hoses do have very deep nuts
