  • If you can prove the mistake was made by your previous employer then they will have to pay it not you.
    I was wrongly taken off emergency tax in a previous job and when I had a similar letter to you with a similar amount owing, I told them I paid what my employer took off me and it was payrolls mistake.
    Tax office agreed and chased them for payment and told me the matter was closed and I never had to pay it.
