thanks for all the replies. we are logging out before turning it off at the mains, ill go through the settings again but there's definitely no save option whether manual or auto. I have seen the checkpoint message in the lego marvels game but when starting the game it still starts from level one.

Do you look for and identify a saved game? There can often be a section to select where your saved games are and you have to go to that to select one. Is there a load game option in the menu? If yes do you select that?

Is your son pressing 'new game' option when he loads it up again instead of 'continue'

The game saves are also linked to the user - if you log in to the PS4 as the same person (an account holder) the PS4 will save game progress. If you use a guest user slot each time, then they won't.
It's impossible to leave any of the modes in Fifa without either it autosaving, or asking you if you want to save part progress - most have auto-save as default setting.
Don't know about Lego specifically, but normally you can press the options button during the game (the little button to the right of the square pad in the middle) which will give you all your options, including a save option.
