Veg boxes...

Hi,

I read an article in BBC Goodfood magazine (this is a link to a shortened piece on their site) this month about veg boxes that made me consider them.

Do any of you get them? And if so, who from and why?

    I don't.

I had 2 trial ones. The first had a fair bit no one would eat (Kale mainly, russet apples, cauliflower) and not enough of anything to make a decent meal for a family of sparrows! 3 medium potatoes.. I mean, what use are they??? This was supposed to be the 'large family box' .. I wasn't expecting it to feed my brood I just wanted to check out the service.

The second was past its best.. to put it a polite way.

I got my money back for both as it was quite definitely substandard.

If you can manage it you are better off going to the fruit market and choosing your own produce or a farm shop or a local greengrocer.

The boxes are far from reasonably priced too. I also had a bit of an issue with the dirt on the food too.. I know it's silly but it is one of my endearing quirks ;)

Aldi is reportedly good for fruit/veg.. can't say I've tried but might be worth a look? I believe milkmen have branched out into fruit and veg too which may be worth investigating?

Don't bother with the Milk & More veg boxes - I tried a couple and both times the veg was well past its' best and unusable. A lot of the stuff had been put in plastic bags and was very sweaty, particularly mushrooms! I had a huge bag of mushrooms in the first box and had to put them in the freezer for the milkman to see the following week (presumably to make sure I wasn't telling porkies!!!).

I didn't get charged for either of the boxes I had.

I love my abel and cole small gourmet box. I get lots of unusual veg and it usually tastes great. It isn't cheap - it's my treat.
If anything has come and it's past it's best they credit my account. I also sometimes treat myself to something else to go with it like a free range chicken or some nice cheese.
I'm getting less hours at work, pregnant and trying to buy a house so will have to cancel soon :(

I also tried Abel & Cole but unfortunately in my area they deliver on a Monday which didn't really suit me - I really wanted a Thursday or Friday delivery. Agree with you that the boxes are very good and I would start having them again if the delivery day changed.

  • I use 5 a day box and heartily recommend them.

Quantities are generous, you can swap out up to 8 items so you can get rid of the kale :p Customer service is always excellent, prompt and helpful.

I get the smallest box at £10.95, they also do a box of 'blemished veg for soup' and 'blemished fruit for smoothies' which are great value, and actually the produce looks perfect, it must just be a bit older.

I like them because it feels like a lovely treat to have it delivered, it encourages me to eat more fruit & veg, and they're local to me (they do national delivery though) I tried a few before, but this is the one for me.

I get the Abel & Cole Medium Fruit and Veg box when my sons are at home from university. It's £20 a week now but I think it is a useful thing.

I used to get a box but I found it was either far too much for one person or not enough and it worked out too expensive in the end. The organic fruit and veg itself was delicious though and much nicer than the supermarket stuff.
