on the subject of Veg Boxes, does anyone purchase a weekly veg box and meat box to avoid visiting/giving money to the supermarkets?

ive been very disappointed with the meat quality in supermarkets recently. watery, anemic looking and tasteless. I may give Abel & cole a go weekly and see of the cost is worth it to stay away from supermarkets.

Is this possible? I may trial it and see. theres only me, DH and DS who lives off the same meals everyday  much against my trials!

I have given this a go on a couple of occasions. The first company became unreliable both for delivery and quality. I suspect this was down to how popular the service became and they couldn't quite keep up.

Second company I couldn't fault on service & quality. Both companies offered a great variety of boxes and were happy for you to request more of one thing and none of the other. The second company has a deli like shop too so they will even deliver non fruit & veg items such as bread, home baking etc If anyone is in Central Scotland they are Hogan's Fine Food Company on FB.

I'm trying to find someone that is in my town so I can keep my money local.

Think they are a great way of making sure I get my 5 a day!

I use 5 a day box and heartily recommend them.

Quantities are generous, you can swap out up to 8 items so you can get rid of the kale :p Customer service is always excellent, prompt and helpful.

I get the smallest box at £10.95, they also do a box of 'blemished veg for soup' and 'blemished fruit for smoothies' which are great value, and actually the produce looks perfect, it must just be a bit older.

I like them because it feels like a lovely treat to have it delivered, it encourages me to eat more fruit & veg, and they're local to me (they do national delivery though) I tried a few before, but this is the one for me.

I don't have that option when I go to their site :( Also the cheapest box is £16.90

I buy a large fruit and veg box from a local supplier. Lovely company, easy to deal with, great quality fruit and veg, good prices. Am I allowed to say who they are here?

used to get a riverford box but switched to abel and cole as they have more range on their other products. I am very pleased with Abel and Cole the veg lasts longer than the supermarket stuff and they throw in freebies fairly regularly too! This week I got 4 free organic eggs :)

    Yes you can!

To whom this would apply - How does it work out? How, when you have a family and have to plan meals ect... do you make the most use of a veg box?

That is the thing I think that holds me back the most. I plan meals at the start of the week and I feel that a veg box would prevent that.

When I had my Riverford Veg Boxes, I could check online a week before delivery to see what was in my next box. This meant I could plan meals for the week - and I could also swap my box of I didn't fancy much of the contents - and choose a box more suited to my needs that week, and I could also add 'extras' if I planned a specific meal and the necessary veg wasn't in my box.

My box used to arrive on a Wednesday, and I would always check on the Saturday beforehand to see what I was getting and make any changes. (I think the changes had to be made at least 24 hours before delivery)

Riverford also do an increasing amount of meat, dairy, bakery, deli and grocery type goods that you can add to your weekly delivery. (The goats cheese is not the cheapest but certainly the yummiest I have ever had!)

Thanks, I have ordered one which will be delivered on Friday. Mine is coming from about 10 miles away and I did get the £10.95 option so maybe it is about distance?

A friend at work has the Abel and Cole box delivered each week and is really pleased with it although she does often come in and ask another work colleague who used to be a chef how to cook the more unusual contents.

I like Aldi's fruit and veg personally.
Go hopefully into each new day, enjoy something from every day no matter how small, you never know when it will be your last
