Thank you for all the replies, so far.

If I wanted to upgrade the hardware, card etc and give it a good clean up, would that be a job I could manage myself?
I would need guidance from you guys, of course.
But is it within reach of a novice, like me?

Nobody asking you these questions: -
    * What do you do with your PC now?
    * Do you want to carry on doing that, or add something else (ie games, etc.)

If you want to go more into gaming, a desktop box is best, with a good graphics card and monitor. Gaming laptops are very expensive.

If you only want low-level games and/or internet shopping, FBook etc, get a good laptop. Check this out, from CCL:

    http://www.cclonline.com

In the "Search box", type NOT 9807 - that is the CCL code which will find a very nice Acer Aspire laptop for £339.99, with £40 cashback.

I have used CCL for years, my wife has an HP laptop, now 4½ years old, from them. First one had a minor fault, they sent me a Returns box, replacement delivered day after I sent it back.

We just use it for general surfing, paying bills, Schoolwork and now my son is getting older some gaming.
He used to play Rollercoaster Tycoon but has moved on to things like Red Faction, SlenderMan, Minecraft and Fifa 13.
I suppose as games get more complex my computer will need to be updated to handle it.

I haven't read any of the above, but was prompted to add my fourpennorth for several reasons.

    1) I have had PC, which in hindsight was to bulky but served the purpose.

    2) changed to laptop, and is priceless, even though I use it like a PC with wifi keyboard and wifi mouse.

    3) tried netbook, but too small and fifddly, sold

    4) bought Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 at £179 but they're much like £130 ish now, and this is great. From switch on, it is usable in far less time than the laptop. My son keeps baiting me to get an ipad mini which I haven't ruled out, but with them, they have this thing called retina screen and there's a huge difference in price to normal screen. Can't get my head round second best for normal screen.

Today I read on mailonline this:-

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2611661/Is-end-road-iPad-Apple-announces-record-profits-iPhone-sales-tablets-sales-fall-16.html

    all food for thought.

    PS, I don't do games.

Or maybe consider buying a games console, perhaps?

If your adding gaming into the equation it makes your choice a little more difficult, as if you son wants more complex up to date games your computer is going to need a bit more grunt to it. Sticking a decent graphics card into an old computer is going to cause a world of pain if the rest of the hardware can't catch up to it.
A laptop with decent graphics capability ups the prices considerably, and with tablets your only limited to basic games from the app stores.

As previously mentioned if your son is an avid gamer a games console is probably a better deal. A PS3 or Xbox360 can be bought for very cheap prices these days since the most recent generation came out.
