Barclays £50 insurance offer

This is most definitely not what it seems. I called them for a quote after they had advertised they would guarantee to beat your renewal quote or drop their price and give you £50 (as long as you take their insurance of course).

Their quote was nearly double what I was already paying and I thought "Yippee, bring on the £50". But as usual, there's no such thing as a free lunch. They would give me the £50 but their price drop was a mere £1 off their quote price. So even taking their policy and getting the £50 I was still £40 a year better off staying where I was. Bit of a con methinks. For cheap home and contents insurance try Halifax Bank of Scotland. I haven't found anyone else comes near to their quotes.

  • Copperdog, I have to agree that they has been a misunderstanding somewhere. I got my renewal from Churchill for £257. Rang round a few others but couldn't get it cheaper than Churchills or near for that matter!

Anyway rang Barclays, they quoted £370 so I told them my renewal is £257, they dropped there price to £256 plus send them my renewal letter from Churchill and they send me a chq for £50. Me = one happy NEW customer of Barclays.

I think that the cheapest online house insurance is Norwich Union Direct. I have a current policy wth them and pay £25 / month with all the bells and whistles (accidental cover + legal+ seperate cover for an expensive watch), I just did a requote today and it is down to £20.52, so I called cancelled my current policy (ends in Apr 06) and started again with a new one!

They are also very good at prce matching and beating, I am am pretty comfortable being with a 'well known household name', I do not have any experience of what they are like with claims.

Does anyone know whether you have to take buildings and contents for them to price match or will they price match buildings or contents separately? I ask as my policies are not with the same insurers and if they can be done separately, I can get them to price match my buildings then go elsewhere for another price match for contents (or go through quidco/other cashback site).

    Many thanks

you can have one or the other but sometimes it works out cheaper to have both together.

I am with Norwich Union at the moment too. However, the Barclays quote is only £25 more. With a bit of luck, I can get Barclays to match Norwich Union, get £50 back and if I order the Barclays quote through GreasyPalm I can get £37.50 cashback from them on top. There must be a catch somewhere as this seems too easy.

Is there anything about comparisons with the amount covered? I have a policy with Cornhill Direct. I have £22,000 of cover plus £1100 personal possessions with £50 excess on each. It costs £80 a year.

The Barclays website quote was £82 with £100 excess, but this did not include the personal possessions. When I added that, (their minimum option being £2500), it bumped the price up to £130 for the year. So I thought that if they give me their level of cover at my price less £1 and give me £50 back I'll have a good deal.
The thing is, Barclays didnt ask how much cover I wanted but I noticed that they had an amount of £50,000 as the maximum, presumably for the quote they had given me.

My question is, are they going to compare their quote of £130 against what I pay now or will they compare it against what I would be paying Cornhill IF I had £50,000 cover with them?
I would also like my £37.50 thru greasy palm but by phoning Barclays for the price match offer does it cancel out the online application as not being 'completed' online?

You can price match for the £50 or get cashback but not both (hence my original question about b and c separately).

If you go for cashback, quidco.com offer £75 for Barclays (takes 2 mins to sign up).

has anyone maned to get them to pricematch on buildings or contents and get £50, plus buy through quidco for the other to get the £75 off?

If you go with the same company are you obliged to buy buildings and contents as a combined plan?

    Many thanks

Barclays quote was £198, price matched renewal -£1 plus £50 back - buildings down to £82.

check that they do like for like - original insurer covered rebuild up to £500,000, rebuild cost of house is just over £100000 which was used for the quote. She was just about to process when I mentioned this should be comparable - she then upped the limit to £500000 to match the original.
