Payment Issue (ESA)

I am disabled and claim ESA (Support Related) & PIP (Both higher)

I was due to be paid ESA last Friday and unfortunately didn’t recite my usual payment, after much deliberation over the phone, the ESA team advised that this was there error due to a system advising that my PIP had expired and they realised this wasn’t the case and had not been updated - therefore i was promised my payment would follow later that day.

Unfortunately, this didn’t happen meaning i’ve gone all weekend with no access to funds, had to cancel my online shopping as i rely on this because I cannot really get about due my visual impairment, I’ve also gone without gas and electricity since late Saturday evening.

Today, (Monday) i have contacted ESA who advised that the error on there system has only been updated today and payment will follow, i asked for a hardship payment but advised that i am not eligible for this payment.

This has affected me over the weekend with added stress and anxiety - I cannot find any help about this, it was not my error however it’s me that is suffering as a result and i’m still awaiting benefit payment.

Can anyone advise me what i can do regarding this?
Regards,
Paul

Contact your utility company now and ask them to add some credit to your meter. Advise them that this is an emergency giving them the details of what has happened.

As regards your ESA payment telephone them again and ask for an immediate payment to be processed explaining that you have no money at all and need food etc.

Have you no friends/family/neighbours who can help out in this situation?
  • Hi,

I have contacted ESA who advise that the payment will be in later today.

Although, this isn’t the point, i’ve been treated unfairly and has caused a stressful situation over the weekend as this wasn’t my error and should have been rectified on Friday as promised - surely they cannot get away with this, if it was the other way round and i owed them it would be a different story altogether.

I rely on online shopping etc and has put me in a difficult situation all weekend :)
    Regards,
    Paul

The problem has certainly been poorly handled, both on Friday and today. Once the problem was identified on Friday. a 'Fast Payment' should have been made. That would have been in your account on Friday. Why that didn't happen is another matter, but it would also seem that you were given incomplete information today also. It was correct to say that you weren't entitled to a hardship payment, but that is because your normal payment would/should go into your bank today. Failure to tell you that compounded the stress and anxiety you were already feeling.
As for the comment from the council, that's beyond belief. I would love to see anybody there try to survive on benefit payment and put some by for an emergency fund.
You could raise a formal complaint with either or both bodies, but I would suggest trying to put it behind you instead. All you are likely to get from a formal complaint is a letter saying that additional training will be given.
