I need a credit card for new job - any recommendations?

Hi there

I am starting a new role soon. I don't get a company credit card but instead will be required to put around £21,000 per 6 months onto a credit card for various expenses. They will be paid back to me as soon as I claim for them/have made the purchase or booking so everything will be cleared.

I am wondering if anyone had any recommendations on which card I should go for, any with particular offers/points/air miles back etc?

Thanks :)

    QIt depends on your circumstances.

Do you have existing cards? What sort of limits?

What is your credit history like?

What's your income and what sort of limit will you need?

    Thanks for replying..

Income is 56k a year. Excellent credit history, currently have 5k on interest free until 2020 which was for a car purchase.

I have another card with a limit of about 10k, but has nothing on it. I could use this one but I'd rather be getting some benefits to having to use my own card!

I think at anyone time the most that would be on it would be no more than 5k.

    Thanks

Expecting you to use your own credit for expenses of around 75% of your salary is unreasonable.
You mention making purchases. You should under no circumstances be using your personal credit to make 'purchases' on behalf of your employer.
With regard to expenses incurred for your personal travel. meals and hotel stays, that is OK I guess but still not reasonable at your salary level for that sort of amount.

Oops just realised it will be around 20k over the year, not every 6 months.

Yeah I was surprised too, every other job I've had in the same field has given me a company credit card.

When I say purchases it will be mainly travel, hotels and then samples to use for meetings & development.

I've been doing a bit of research and seems it's either cash back or air miles? I'm thinking cash back might be better as I always struggle to use my air miles as it is. The dates and times are never good!

    Thanks ;)

Ben8282 has it right. It's unreasonable for an employer to require an employee to make using his/her own card compulsory.

However, even at the revised figure of £20k, that could be worth a personal cash rebate of £100 on a 0.5% cashback card or other value on a points/miles card. If that's worth it to you, it could sugar the pill.

Depending on your personal situation, it could have an impact if/when you want to take out another card or make a mortgage application.

To answer the original question, an Amex will give the best return and is highly likely to be accepted for travel-related purchases. The Platinum Cashback card pays 1.25% (5% in the first 3 months, up to £125). Annual fee of £25 but the extra cashback on £20k will more than cover it. Get a referral from the referrers forum for some bonus cashback (not sure what the current offer is).

Most companies will give advances for expenses so using personal credit isn't compulsory, but it's a great way to rack up cashback/miles/whatever.

Putting £1.75k through a personal account for business purposes?

I'd be so happy to be in that position!

Get an Amex and watch the loyalty points / avios roll in :) Which card you get depends on what you want, I'd probably be torn between the Amex Rewards Gold card or the paid BA card in your situation! But as you say, Avios is not for you, then the Amex Rewards Gold card might be good.

I have used a number of different cards for the same thing over the years as different offers have been available. Most recently I have been using the Amex Costco card. There is no fee for it but you have to be a member of Costco which is about £25 a year (from memory, that may not be exact). You're supposed to be self employed, a business owner, or work in particular fields to be able to join Costco, but its easy enough to join even if you don't precisely meet their criteria.

It pays 3% cashback on dining out and 2% on travel spend so is ideal for your purposes. It also pays 1% on anything else (this 1% is capped at £300 per year but that won't affect you).
