Pretty good I'd say, assuming you are on an 8meg connection. (the most you will ever get (theoretical limit on 8 meg) is just over 7000 down and about 448 up)
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

the 5500 is an approx speed based on distance, but you are exceeding that.

To find out what your connection speed is, you need to look at the modem or router as appropriate; online tests will only show you your speed at that particular moment in time... you could be on a much faster line but your connection could be slower than it should be depending on time of day, SNR etc

If you have a modem, you will almost certainly have installed a bit of software to do the dial-up part... look for a new icon on the bottom right of the screen in the taskbar. If you hover over them, you'll probably find one that gives you the connection speed.

If you have a router, you'll need to connect to that, usually via a web browser, to find the speed. Try typing http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 into IE or Firefox and see what happens. You will need a username and password which will probably be in a booklet in the box the router came in. You could try "admin" and "password" (without the quotes) as that's often the default. If you get in, you'll probably see a control panel screen, look for a connections summary page or something similar. Remember to change the password whilst you're there... if you can get in with admin and password, any half-brained hacker will be able to too!

If you post details of your modem/router model, I'll try and give you further help if you need it.

I use 'www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk' It keeps a record of your previous tests and shows you the average speed over all the tests you have done.
