Holiday to be cancelled/ sold help
Bad-Boy-Button

Hi there, I am just looking for a little bit of advice for my parents. My mam bought my dad a week long holiday to Fuerteventura for Christmas. Sadly grandad (mam's dad) was took into hospital on Christmas day with pneumonia and is still in. Obviously my mam does not want to go now so has asked me to look into either cancelling, claiming on the travel insurance or sell it on so she does not loose her money. I popped into Thomas Cook and they said there is nothing they can do as it is within 13 weeks of the travel date (Due to fly from Newcastle on Sat 13th Jan). I rang the travel insurance company and have arranged for a claim form to be posted out. The problem is I have read the conditions and any claim would only be valid if either one of my parents were too ill to travel or died.
Cancellation, bottom right corner
What is the legalities of this and will they still be able to claim as it is such a close relative that is ill?
The final option would be to sell the holiday but with less than a week to go will it be difficult to change the names on the paper work etc? And where would be the best place to advertise?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Regards, BBB

Yor link is only the summary. http://www.primaryinsurance.co.uk/goto/primary_insurance/documents/28022006124313Primary_Policy_Doc_2006.pdf is the full document.
What you are covered for:
The underwriter will pay, up to the amount shown in the
Schedule of Benefits on your certifcate, for your
proportion of the costs which you have paid or agreed to
pay and which you cannot recover from any source, if it is
necessary and unavoidable to cancel or cut short your trip
as a result of:
(a) death, serious injury or illness during the period of
insurance of:
• you, or
• a person you are travelling with, or
• a relative, or
• a close business associate who lives in the
United Kingdom, or
• a friend or relative who lives abroad with whom
you were staying.
But they do have a bit of a get out
What you are not covered for:
The underwriter will not pay for the following in addition to the
general exclusions on page 28 in connection with claims made
under section A1
• the excess as shown in the Schedule of Benefits on your
certifcate
• any claim for curtailment which has not been approved by
the relevant Assistance Services Provider, as detailed on
page 4, prior to your return to the UK
• any claim which is not supported by written medical
confirmation and clinical reports from medical service
providers as well as other proof of the happening of an
event causing you to cancel or cut short your trip.
• any costs which you have paid or agreed to pay, if your trip
is cancelled for the following reasons:
• claims arising directly or indirectly as a result of a preexisting
medical condition relating to you, your
travelling companion, a relative or close business
associate of yours, or the person with whom you have
arranged to stay whilst on the trip, relating to:
a) any pre-existing medical condition which
would require you to answer yes to the
Medical Screening Questions, unless
declared to and accepted by us
So it is not as cut and dried as the summary suggests so I suggest you get onto the insurers pdq. hth.

I hope your Grandad recovers quickly
Sadly I dont think you will sell it unless its for peanuts. The deals right now to Fuerteventura and the other Canaries are silly money you can get a 4*HB named hotel for about 200pp and SC for about 90pp.
You could try a quick list on ebay but you wouldl have to state that thte 25pp change name as to be paid on top.
Good luckIf you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel0 -
It does help, thank you. I read the summary page and assumed thta she wasn't covered. The claim form should be here tomorrow and I'll phone them to clarify one or two points whilst going through the form.
Anyone know where best to sell this on so I can make arrangements in the mean time?0 -
I had the same trouble last year when I tried to sell one of moms holidays.
I put it on here with a full list of what was inc and what she wanted for it and what had to be paid to her and direct to the Tour op.
Start a new thread as a late deal and see what happens
Fingers crossed
PS check the prices now for the same holiday and make it cheaper if you want to get rid of it because you will have the insurance excess (about 50-75pp I think)If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel0 -
you cant claim the insurance, and sell the holiday.....0

you cant claim the insurance, and sell the holiday.....
I'm not trying to do both, I'm covering all angles as there is not much time. If the insurance will cover it then great, but if it does not then I need to have everything in place to sell. I'm just trying to save my mam some money.0 -
Insurance is the best route but try what I said and list it on here as a Late deal.If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel0

Will do. I don't have all the info at home but I'll get it from my mam in the morning and post it on here asap. Thank you for your help.

This is VERY IMPORTANT DON'T SELL THE HOLIDAY
If you do you will have no claim with the Insurance Company as there's nothing to claim on - the Holidays been sold. Yes you'll have made a loss on selling it - but that won't be covered by your Insurers. It's called "Financial Guarantee" and is NOT insureable. At worst you could get prosecuted for fraud.
As it stands your Mother has a genuine claim under the Travel Insurance policy.0 -
I have checked through the paper work and my mam would not qualify for the insurance as it was bought after my grandad went into hospital. At that point my mam still thought that he might be out by the departure date.
We cannot claim on the insurance so I'm going to put it up for sale.
Thanks for all the help.
