Free School Meals

I'm a single parent on a low income and I'm claiming the maximum WTC and CTC.
My children normally take packed lunches to school, but came home with a letter about International Week, where they will get dinners from different countries.
I was filling the form in so they can stay and noticed a 'tick here if you qualify for free school meals' box.
I didn't know about free meals! Am I entitled to them based on my Tax Credits and income?

Thanks for the link
That's odd! I'm on considerably less than £13,480 a year, but because part of my income is WTC, I don't qualify for free meals ???
Will keep them on packed lunches as I can't afford school meals on a weekly basis. They just stay for special events like this one and Christmas dinner etc. They call me Mr Pig!0 -
Thats also my understanding of the rules.
I double checked with my own local authority whose site says "
Current Location: Education
Am I entitled to free school meals?
To qualify for free school meals you must be in receipt of either INCOME SUPPORT, INCOME BASED JOB SEEKERS ALLOWANCE OR CHILD TAX CREDIT WITH NO WORKING TAX CREDIT AND AN ANNUAL INCOME OF BELOW £13,480."
It seems unfair that someone with an income below £13.480 without a WTC is entitled to FSM while a person with the same total income including a WTC isn't.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I sometimes wonder why I work to be honest. I'd be financially better off sitting on my bum at home and claiming everything going ::)They call me Mr Pig!0

my single mum friend is better off on CTC and WTC as she is able to keep all of her maintainance money.
If she were to go onto IS she wouldn't keep the maintainance money or only a small amount of it.
I'm sure i've seen Fran or Ted mention on here that you can have a better off calculation done, though i'm not sure if somewhere does it for you or you can work it out yourself.0 -
The CAB will do a comparison for you
http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/getadvice
or the lone parent advisor at the job centre can do it.
I had been offered a full time job and she advised me not to take it - I'd have been £10 / week worse off after taking into account the benefits I'd lose and the childcare I'd have to pay.
I still can't believe it !
She said that if I really wanted to work I should stick to part-time as I'd still be eligible for some help.0 -

As for the free school meals, it really isnt fair that people on a low income cant get them, only those on IS, JSA etc.0 -

well as one who you describe above i take offense! when you are genuinely claiming due to illness do you know what it is like to live on second hand hand me down furniture/plates/pots etc or wear second hand clothes? wonder if every knock at the door is someone from housing or ba wanting to see your bank statements or your kids savings books because they can whenever they want? and to cry out of embarassment because your kids have a grand total of £46 saved after ten years? its great fun sitting on your bum every day with no prospects or nothing to look forward to other than day in day out poverty, but at least knowing your kids get one decent meal a day at school, that some people object to them getting?? if i could work i would be grateful!trying hard to count my blessings while surrounded by idiots :O)0 -

I think what Sammypops was trying to say is that she (he?) would actually be BETTER off not working, so all the things you cannot do and are frustrated with would apply to Sammypops too. How frustrating must it be to be working and STILL not be able to afford some of the basics?
NB. In most Jobcentre Plus offices now there are Specialist Incapacity Benefit Advisers who are there to help people on incapacity benefits. You might want to give them a try - don't write yourself off even if your doctor has?Nice to save.0 -
yeah i didnt think it was meant as a pop at people who cant/wont work either
rather a pop at the stupid benefits systems we have
they are trying to get people to work but then putting brick walls in their way
because i receive WTC I am entitled to free prescriptions et al, but my son cant have free school meals?
and that website posted above really annoyed me by saying it was trying to protect people who previously received JSA/IS
more or less saying that people who work never had it in the first place so its tough !!!
just doesnt make sense
by the way - i dont think i would want to put my child through having free school meals anyway - especially in the school he is in (most parents are quite well off)
my son would ask why he didnt have to take his lunch money in... and as a person who received free school meals as a child, its an awful position to be in
kids can be so cruel - i used to dread mondays and every lunchtime at senior school0
