OH and I are off to Paris for 4 days - staying in Montparnasse
Few questions I hope someone can help with please?
We intend to do the sandemans free walking tour - are they any good and how much should we tip?
Is the museum pass good value? It doesn't look like it covers the Eiffel Tower?
As Montparnasse is slightly 'out' how much hastle is it to get the Navigo Decouverte (the follow on from the Carte Orange) I hear that they try to flog the Paris Visite card instead (which will work out more expensive if we include the RER)
I did see a post which had lots of useful info from someone who looked like they were from Paris (was it Frenchman?) but I can't find the thread
Lastly any recommendations for nice places to eat (not mega expensive but delicious, good value food)
Many thanks in advance

Montparnasse is not slightly out, you can cycle to the Eiffel Tower in minutes with the free bicycles on offer(free for thirty minutes).
Do a forum search for the info. No point in re-posting the same thing over again.0 -
I think that the Paris Viste card is more expensive depending on which zones you travel in rather than whether you use the RER or metro. Would a carnet be an option for you. The Carte orange was always easy to pick up but you did need passport photos for it - does Navigo require the same? If it does get your photos done before you go to save a few euros.
I would recommend a trip up the Tour Montparnasse - less people, no queues, cheaper and to top it all great views of the Eiffel Tower!
Chez Clement for a reasonably priced tasty meal on the 106, Boulevard Montparnasse and it might be close to where you are staying.
If you are under 24 National Museums are free for you and they are free for all ages on the 1st Sunday of every month. The link shows you which are the National Museums in Paris

Loads of info on where to eat etc from people who've been to Paris

....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
Donnie - thanks for the bike information but the other threads tell me nothing about the walking tour and nothing about how difficult it is to get the navigo which is why I posted
The good place to eat - well people go all the time and may have discovered a new eaterie with which to tempt me!!
If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!0 -
Fair enough...
If you are in Montparnasse, head down Rue PAUL BARRUEL in the direction the Holiday Inn Pasteur. There's a bakery up there on the left that does some nice Formule for an inexpensive brunch.
Rue Mouffetard; Latin Quarter in the evening.
Here's the link to the bicycle info again: http://www.en.velib.paris.fr/comment_ca_marche0 -
Montparnasse is our fav area to stay in Paris. Our favourite restaurant is Sud Ouest & Cie which serves a set menu and is very reasonable by Parisian standards. Its on Montparnasse Boulevard, I have posted a pic below for you.

Reasonable? There are a fair few places, especially in the Latin Quarter, with set menus from 15 Euros to 26 Euros. Beyond that they offer Gourmet Menus. I wouldn't agree that it is reasonable by Parisian standards.... unless the food is outstanding.
But I too was happy that I stayed in Montparnasse. Given the choice, will stay again.0 -
Well, just got back from Paris and had a fab time. We ended up buying the Navigo Decouverte travel pass and I am sooooo glad we did. It meant we could nip off to different parts of Paris on the metro at a whim. Also did the sandeman's free walking tour good fun and helped us get our bearings but guide was definitely encouraging everyone to sign up for the 'paid' excursions. Didn't find Paris overly expensive but that's probably because we usually ski in France and the prices are fairly similar!!! Also did all the free things and stuff not covered by the museum card for the first 2 days so only bought a 2 day
museum pass (instead of a 4 day one - there's no 3 day)
Donnie - didn't use the bikes Parisian drivers looked far too manic!! and Errata - thank's for the ivebeenthere web site - found a fantastic bistro - looked nothing but the food was gorgeous.
So thanks for your help everyone

we loved the idea of the museum pass as it means that you don't have to "DO" a museum and have the flexibility to see what you want. We popped into the Louvre to look at the Mona Lisa but did not want to see many other things in there. In Les Invalides ( I think)I wanted to see Napoloens tomb but was not bothered about loads of old canons.
Musee D'Orsay is great and we loved the Rodin museum which is set in a house that he used to own and has a lovely cafe in the gardens along with someof the sculptures. L'Arc de Triomph also houses a museum and you can stand on the top and watch the traffic which is always entertaining and see the view. it is open until Midnight so you can go in the evening too for the lit Paris skyline.
We purchased a carnet of I think 10 metro tickets and then used them for long journeys and walked the short bits0
