Some cheap(er) laser printers for modest home/business/student listed for you

I've been looking for a printer for student/home use, and have spent some time comparing the cheaper laser printers against their running costs - which is the true cost of a printer as most of you will realise. I've had enough of ink-hungry inkjets and printer head blockages with compatible cartridges, and I don't want to risk eBay or wait in the very long queues at the university's 5p/page service.

In general the more expensive a laser printer, the cheaper it is to run in the long term, e.g. £50 cartridge for 10000 pages! Of course, I'm not going to print enough pages for it to be worth buying such a printer, so I looked at sub £110 laser printers. I excluded cheap printers if their ink cartridges cost too much, such as the Canon i-SENSYS LBP-3100. Secondly, the cheap laser printers will have reduced starter toner cartridge sizes, to make you buy new cartridges sooner, so I've included how many pages a new printer is rated for. Lastly, some laser printers need a separate drum replaced after a certain number of pages, while others have the drum included with the cartridges.

All prices include VAT and delivery except for the first printer. I haven't written down all the places I found deals for cartridges. The overall costs per certain number of printed pages doesn't include the savings you would get from multi-buy deals. You should be aware of this, as some sites offer 2 for 3 deals for instance.

The cheapest deal turns out to be the Dell 1100 Laser Printer, as you can get it from IJTdirect for £71.90, rated for 7000pages. See below.

Comments:
The Oki B430d has nice specs with good cartridge sizes and warranty period, but Oki tend to exaggerate their products, and there are no reviews for it. Also it is 11kg! It would be more suited to a small office.. The HL-2035 is cheap to start with for a student to print 1000 pages, but not as price efficient as others. The HL-2140 starts off more expensive than others, but has quite low running costs in the longer term than the others. The Samsung ML-2240 is actually more expensive for a student than the HL-2140 when you take into account printer cartridge costs, but eventually these costs will come down (6700+ pages) as there is no drum to replace. The Oki B2200 is interesting as a LED printer, and is the smallest printer of the group. The HP 1018 looks pretty good, but it looks like the Dell 1100 is the winner for student laser printer with that deal - it is just as small as the Samsung, but cartridge costs are much lower and easier to find . It's not so hot on business graphics, but text is what a student is after.

Appreciate sharing the info in the post.

I have been toying with the idea of going for a colour laser and getting shot of the inkjet.

I get bored too quickly chasing models, prices, reviews etc...

Don't fancy doing another post for Colour Lasers do you?? :):)

Colour lasers are crap for photos however.
    British Ex-pat in British Columbia!
  • Here's a colour laser, seems pretty good, from the same place as I posted the last one from.

If you buy recycled toners from them, I think they say it's free. Not too sure how it works out, as I didn't examine it that closely since I've already got 2 printers and don't need a third! Their toner's are good though, much better than the cartridge world one I got!

  • Sorry no time to read your post in detail but here's my 2p worth:

I've been using cheap samsung lasers for the last 6 years and been very happy, the cartridges are refillable, and you can do two refills before the print quality deteriorates. After that I just buy the latest model and sell the old one on ebay.

You appear to be taking the manufacturer's quoted pages/toner at face value. No way will you get 7000 pages out of the dell...

I agree you can't take everything at face value, but on what other basis is there to compare them? Oki tends to exaggerate its claims (i.e. 25pages/min comes realistically to 11-16), while others are more accurate. There was one printer where the quoted speed was almost the same as what the reviewers could get.

Also I haven't factored in the print save modes of any of the models, which reviews say for some have no noticeable decline in quality.

Don't forget not to place a laser next to you on the desk if you are printing lots of long documents, they emit ozone, not ideal for your health!

Place in a ventilated area or near a window.

This is where I get bored with searching.

It's a great price, and it looks much better in Black than the standard white cubes.

High capacity Toners are over £60, low capacity toners are about £45.
Sure there are cheaper places, but assuming the colours run out together, or not far apart, and it gets pretty expensive.

Specs say toners last about 2000 pages for High Capacity Toners, user reviews say 600-700.

I couldn't see any images of photo prints, I don't expect much TBH but on the odd occasion of printing a photo, I would still like it to be fairly decent so would like to actually see a photo print.

Sounds like another one to strike off the list.

IJT will further discount the offer that moneygrabber found by 10% with discount codes, or alternatively a different code will give you a free mp3 player (512mb I think).

To get a Dell 1100 Laser printer with 1000page rated starter toner, as well as 3 IJT toner cartridges (2000pages rated each) for £71.91

Using any of these promotion codes:
    EWT99
    MSH66
    222CU
    22PRV
MP39 (obviously for the free mp3 player)
  • I'm not sure that they allow any further discounts on those printers. I think it might just be for inks, but you can correct me if I'm wrong!
