I need some help! I have a pair of suede mules, which I think are also suede lined. I've had them for a couple of years, and frankly, they stink! Apart from the smell they are in really good condition and I don't want to have to chuck them out.
Anyone have any foolproof money saving tips for getting rid of the pong?
TIA.

Air them outside on a fine day (or 3), then sprinkle with a little bi-carb to keep fresh. If all else fails put a few drops of essential oil on a cotton wool ball & stuff in the toes;) .Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

As above.
Yesterday I made some shoe stuffers for my menfolk's trainers - old sock filled with some cat litter (odour absorbing kind ). Pop them inside your shoes when not wearing. You can make scented one's by filling with some chopped up scraps of old tights/wadding adding a handful of dried lavender, 1 Tbsp of bicarb and refreshing with lavender oil periodically.
Charcoal is the old fashioned method of "odour eaters".
For future usage .... I read the other day that you should alternate your shoe wearing because of the sweat glands in your feet - shoes should have a day's grace between wears to air out.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Don't read if you have a weak stomach
Sprinkling bicarb into shoes is a great idea but if the shoes are sweaty the bicarb will just turn into a sweaty runny stinky mess of gloop (ewwww) which will be difficult to get out
So use Queenies idea or make sure they are completly dry. When life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -
Try popping them in the freezer over night. Kills the smell.0

Try a half water half vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray inside the shoes after wearing and leave 24 hours to dry out. I do this to all my shoes and the stink has disappeared.
A really stinky shoe might need a 50% bleach/water solution, but be careful with this as it can ruin colours.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
Newspaper stuffed into shoes absorbs the pong. Works well with musty books, too.0

The thing about stuffing the toes with things is that these are open toed shoes, so that's not going to work ... I may well go and try the vinegar/water solution - I've got some permanently on the go anyway.
I can't try bleach cos I'm allergic to it, it sets my asthma off.
Thanks all!
