Cat/rabbit litter tray - calcium deposits

If you have a pet in your home which uses a litter tray, you'll know what calcium deposits are.
If the bottom of the tray turns white with what looks like baked on dried powder you'll need this simple 'recipe'.

I did actually buy a new litter tray for my house rabbit before I found out this conconction and now there's no need, not for quite some time anyway.

Sprinkle the area with bicarbinate of soda (the type you put in cakes) so that it is completely covered.
Pour malt or white vinegar over the area and watch it fizz.

Leave for about half an hour and you should see that the calcium desposits have broken up into little flakes which you can wash away with a little help from an old scouring pad or a sponge which you used to use for washing up.

I use a new sponge with the green scouring pad thing on for washing up every week so before I throw it away at the weekend I scrub the litter tray then the old sponge can go straight in the bin. Sorted!

    Here she is

She's actually standing in an empty paddling pool. This is a money savinf tip for those of you with hamsters!

I put the hamsters toys like tubes and climbing frames etc in an empty child's paddling pool so she can play safely under supervision. If I turn my back for a second I know she's safe because the walls are too high for her to climb (yet!)

Can we start a new thread called 101 uses for paddling pools do you think? LOL ;D

aww what a cute rabbit ;D

    I know ;D

Thanks Trafalgar! She's very tame for a bunny. She comes when you call her, knows basic commands like 'get down', she jumps onto knees for cuddles and licks faces when the word 'kisses' is used.

    Altogether now.....AWWWWWWWWW! :-*

Now if you think THAT'S cute, try this!

I am always a little puzzled about these tips that involve mixing vinegar with Bicarbonate of Soda.

Surely all the 'fizz' proves is that the vinegar is reacting with the Bicarbonate of Soda which just neutralises the action of the vinegar. Why not just use the vinegar alone to act with the calcium deposit?

From my 'O' level chemistry days is was a case of:
    ACID+BASE = SALT+WATER

Once the acid (vinegar) is neutralised by the base (Bicarbonate of Soda) it cannot act on the other base (calcium deposit in litter tray). I think you are just lucky that the vinegar has time to react with the litter tray deposit before being completely neutralised by the Bicarbonate of Soda!

My guess is you could use vinegar alone (and less of it) to achieve the same effect! If there are any chemists out there please let us know your views!

I have noticed white deposits in our cat litter tray but found that you can get rid of them with boiling water so have not tried the vinegar approach myself.

The only thing I use Bicarbonate of Soda for is to clean out the fridge out the microwave!

We have no vinegar (except cider vinegar) which is mixed with honey and hot water for colds, flu and migraines.
