buying at auction these days

will be attending my first auction soon with view to put in a bid on a house....
in your exsperiance is it a good time to buy at a auction or is everyone doing it thinking they are getting a real bargain due to slump in house prices or is it in fact pushing the prices up at auctions??

Typical auction only sells two-thirds of the lots at the moment.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

went to the barnard marcus auction this week. attendance down, more lots unsold than a year ago. usually you would expect the september auction to be extra busy after the long summer break.

do your home work, view the lot more than once, stick to your budget.

ps if you read this and you were the girl at the back of the room barnard marcus auction. blonde, with suit - you were very nice.

How do you find out where auctions are taking place?
The only website on the internet is charging £80 a year for the info!!

If you look at Alsops and Barnard Marcus, you'll be looking at a couple of the biggest. Does Countrywide still do them? I haven't been to one since around 1998.

wouldnt it be better to attend a few auctions just to get the hang of things before intending to buy at an auction

best thing i learnt from watching a propertyp0rn show was a sucker getting stitched up by a auctioneer cause the buyer didnt notice him inventing bids, be careful.
  • i remember reading on another thread that it is legal for a vendor to bid for their own property to get the auction moving !!! atleast heard that it is legal till the reserve price is reached. dont know how accurate that thread was on this count.

  • is there a way to find out all the available auction properties in a city on a website which pools all the available individual auction properties on a city basis rather than auctioneer basis

the above link gives details of all auctioneers. but if i want to find out all auction properties in a particular city then i have to trawl thru all the auctioneers websites. unless there already is a website that gives details of all auction properties on a city where the property is in rather than where the auctioneer is based in. would make things a lot easier for buyers and sellers as would increase more interested eyeballs on properties and get everyone better deals (buyer, seller and auctioneer) and less waste of time. wonder why there are no online property auctions yet, that would save everyone time and money, plus one could have a week or so for auction period and get better deals for sellers. if shares can be bought and sold online, i wonder why properties cant be bought and sold online
