I booked thru Expedia this year which was the cheapest by far - £400 each for our flights and hotel for 4 nights. Our hotel was the Park Central, which is not far from Times Square and was lovely, plus very reasonable.
Also if it is the first time you are visiting NY I can highly recommend https://www.bigapplegreeter.org - these are local guides who show you around the city for free. You need to book with them in advance and they come and meet you at your hotel and take you anywhere you want to go. Ours was fanstastic, very knowledgeable and really helped us get our bearings for the est of the trip.

Hi Mitac
We are a family of 5 going in March for 10 days. We are staying at the Embassy Suites, Lower Manhattan - part of the Hilton chain. It was the best deal we could find for the 5 of us, rather than 2-3 hotel rooms we have a suite of 2 rooms. Manhattan is not cheap to stay in though and we found prices in nearby Brooklyn nearly half the price of Manhattan. It depends where you want to be and what your budget is.
Have a great time, we can't wait and the info and advice from this forum has been great!Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0 -
I came back from my first visit to New York just over a week ago. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Manhattan Chelsea (see my review here), which is part of the Hilton group of hotels, well-located and quite reasonably priced.
Also, we bought a New York Pass (see here) for 7 days which includes entrance fees to many attractions as well as discounts. There was a 20% off offer on the passes when I bought them, and we worked out that we were likely to visit enough attractions to make the $115 worth spending. Furthermore, we were able to skip almost all of the queues at the Empire State Building, as well as ticket queues for the Liberty & Ellis Island ferry, the Guggenheim Museum, etc.
If you are likely to make use of the Subway on a regular basis, it is definitely worth buying a weekly ticket, which costs $24. I found the Subway to be very reliable, if a little confusing at first, but people were always very quick to volunteer help and directions.0 -
Hello there,
I just got back from New York last week. I found this board very useful for things to do.
Subway passes are great and very cheap, they run 24 hrs a day as well. A bit of a confusing system though. I think subway lines with letters run south and number run north, still not sure though.
There are two city passes that are around, one allows access to 6 of the top attractions and the other to around 100, this includes lots of smaller museums. We did the Citysights NY open bus tour of the city, as this tour included a circle line boat tour which was a real bonus. Also, we got 10% off by asking them as I saw it on their web page, also Greyline do 10% off for online booking. The tours are very intense as there are 4 to do, at around 2 hrs each, in 48 hrs but good value at $44 each and cheaper for children.
We also saw a Broadway show Beauty and the Beast, was very spectacular almost like seeing the film. We got the half price ticket from the TKTS booth, for the evening performance they open at 3pm but get there around 2.30 so you’re not too far down the queue.
We found it very difficult to find places to eat, Times Square is very expensive, so do some research on the best places to eat.
Just to let you know the Tourist Information Centre in Times Square has free internet access for 10 mins at a time, so best to go there you may have to wait 5 mins for a free machine.
Regarding hotels we stayed in the Jolly Madison Towers in New York. Room was small but hotel was really nice and we only paid about £55 a night for the room. In Chicago we stayed in the Embassy Suites and it was the best hotel we stayed in by far. Complementary breakfast which was great, and also free drinks at the bar between 5.30 and 7.30 pm and hors durves were served then as well. The rooms were great as they are like little suites with a fridge, microwave and sink, as well as the lounge and bedroom sections.
What ever happens you will have a great time, there is so much to see, but expect much history they don't have much past turn of last century. Oh yeah don't forget your forigen visitors Macy's Card for 11% off throughout the store.
Hope this helps.

most of the people giving advice live in NY. This was recommended in another thread on MSE but I can't remember the poster to give him due credit.
A fun pass is well worth getting for free use of the subway and buses. I got a day pass but I'm pretty sure there are week ones as well. You can get them at any subway station. There are subway lines which are lettered or numbered but keep the same one regardless of which direction they run in. I found the thing to be most careful of is express trains (which have their own letters or numbers) as it is easy to find yourself going straight through the station where you wanted to get off. It can be confusing initially but you can get subway and bus maps which are very useful and everybody will be incredibly helpful and friendly.
Enjoy your trip!0 -

I hope you signed up for Hilton Honours!
For 10 days * 2 rooms, you would pick up quite a few points.
You can then use these points for free stays somewhere else.
And ... even if your not going to use them on hilton, over on Flyertalk.com people will swap HH points for LOTS of other things - other hotel points, flight upgrades etc.0 -

Definitely a good idea if you stay in a Hilton-family property. I got 16,300 points for my 6 night stay.0 -
Hi, I stayed at the beginning of Dec. what a fantastic time we had, we stay at the holiday inn express in queens. 4 blocks from the metro into manhattan such an easy way to travel no problems and no hassle, did the sightseeing bus tour with grayline from the port authority bus depot also did a shopping trip with them to woodbury common over 200 shops and cheaper than new york. If you look at BA now their offering sale prices up to march for flights to JFK and Newark for £279 return, not as cheap as the one's Martin put on this website in September but still very good.
Enjoy your trip its just fantastic.
