Good grief that is monstrous. I think you've been negligent allowing it to grow that big unchecked.
I think you have a moral responsibility to have it professionally reduced at your expense, even if you don't have to do so.

    Nice fence.

How about you remind them of the law but as a good will offer you will give £xxx as a contribution on seeing invoice and job complete.

Agree with every word. My neighbor thankfully has cut down her massive trees to a better size late last year, shame it wasn't another 2m or so to align with our own but it looks much better now.

 That thing is awful! It must be devaluing both houses. It's as big and as wide as the gardens themselves.

I would rather spend all day every day looking at the brickwork, which isn't even close, than have my entire garden overshadowed by that thing.

Really, it's not your neighbour's fault at all that they're upset and I'm not actually surprised that the police were trying to 'influence' you. It's ugly, it will affect the ability to grow much around it and it's frankly incredibly antisocial to have that there.

It should be coming down, not you making them take financial responsibility for the monstrosity that is eating their garden. I'm not surprised the police have to get involved if you think trying to obliterate something pretty inoffensive like a building over the back of their own garden with that is reasonable. It isn't.

Notice how your neighbours trim their bushes so they don't grow over over your side of the boundary? That's incredibly neighbourly.

ETA: Personally I can't see how a tree that big in that area could possibly be adding value to a house..
As in my post yesterday, before the full horror of the thing was revealed, that would be a liability for the vast majority of buyers, not an enhancement.

No church could possibly be awful enough to make it a worthwhile feature of the garden.

We have had problems with these neighbors

Having seen that tree and the fact that you don't think there's anything wrong with it, I suspect it's the neighbours who have had problems with you.

    who owns that fence?

from the pic it also looks like that tree is relatively close to the building on the left(is that yours?), could well be capable of damaging that if not already at a size that is causing damage or will do when cut back/down.

I was on your side OP until I saw that pic. I had visions of it being a beautiful tree with just a few branches overhanging, not casuing much of an issue.

However after seeing that pic, I have to say that the tree is horrendous and no wonder the neighbours want to get it cut back. I'd love to see a photo showing how much of the tree actually covers your garden.

Phone around, get some quotes and do the neighbourly thing.
