When I was at school, we made yoghurt in a thermos flask using a spoon of bio yoghurt as a starter culture in some warm milk. Can't remember the details but it worked and was virtually free (flavour added at the end).

These are £15 on amazon so not alot cheaper but still cheaper, not sure why you would need a thermometer tho, i make yogurt in my slowcooker and don't need a thermometer.

I've been eyeing this up for awhile (hence knowing the amazon price) as it has the nice jars and looks neat however since i can already make yogurt i don't really need it.

In the reviews on amazon a reviewer said that you needed a thermometer. I thought it was £18.98 0n Amazon, thats the price i found it at.

oh your right last time i looked it was £14.99

i saw a video on youtube that said you cook it til it starts to make a slight frothy bubble, then cool it til you can just dip your finger in it for a second before adding the yogurt culture (i use yeo valley 50p tubs you get in tesco not that expensive powder stuff you buy) and all my yogurts turned out fine. i made 2 litres last night acually, cost me about £1.70.

Quintwins - I usually buy the easi-yo powders but I'm looking to cut costs. I've never heard of making yoghurt in a slow cooker. Could you tell me how please? :)

i use this method, i use value uht milk, value skimmed milk powder and yeo vally 50p pots, i've also used normal full fat fresh milk before no problems, i only use uht so i can save fridge space as my fridge is tiny.
