Outstanding Debt search without my permission

Hi
i've noticed 2 outstanding debt searches from galen finance on my credit report. i did not give permission for these but equifax reckons they dont need it - is this the case?????
also, why do these searches hang around for 6 years!?!?!?!
any help appreciated as to how i attack these and hopefully get them removed?
