Buying Glasses Online

Heylo.
I sometimes find styles of glasses that I like online but my optician doesn't supply them. I have a glasses prescription due to poor eyesight (obviously.lol.)
Is buying glasses online safe? Have you ever done it?
I have come across a few sites that ask you to put in the details on your prescription e.g. sph, cyl, axis etc and they create the glasses to taylor your prescription.
I've never ordered anything like this online before so any help or any of your experiences would be greatly appreciated.
xx

yes I have bought online...but use them as spares..there is a measurement online that they need that won't be on your prescription...you need to measure pupil to pupil....also no adjustments can be made to fit your head!!lol so hope and pray they fit!!! Mind you, you would be able to bend metal ones a wee bit eh?
edited to say I ordered about 6 pairs from America and I haven't worn then out of the house!!lol..they were cheap and fine but I think I will stick to trying them on in store...
If you know what style suit you then I would defo buy online again but if you are unsure then I would leave it!You may walk and you may run

Hello.
Sorry about the late reply. Been having a few net problems. Typical.lol.
I'm not sure if I'm going to give it a go yet as I always find things like this a bit risky but I'll keep you posted.

Most glasses you buy in UK have a series of measurements on the inside of one of the arms I think It is the width of the frame, the length of the arm and the width of the nose bridge. If the frames you are wearing fit well, checking these sizes against online frames should also give you a good fit0

Here's some information about frames measurements. Hope this helps.0 -
Yes. I use glassesdirect, and it's been trouble free so far. I ordered another pair last night actually, for the summer. But I'd advise finding what style suits you first. There is a facility to upload photos of yourself on their website to see what their frames may look like on you: it's a fair approximation.
Then, if I need anything adjusting, I'll just go into somewhere in town. I can understand the reservations with these things: but the same type of glasses that cost me about £50-70 in specsavers cost me £15 on-line. I also ordered some designer ones yesterday, that would have been around £150 on the high street, but which cost me £75. The savings outweigh the benefits of being able to try things on in the shop, having a more personalized service etc.'We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time. Well at least you can afford to experiment that way! Due to a petite face and a strong prescription, I have had some v expensive disappointments even through buying in stores. Thick lenses look a lot worse in the frames than the invisible ones in the samples. I once bought a pair that staff and a friend admred on me in the store. When the thick lenses were fitted, they looked so ugly when that they had to be covered with a Polaroid tint!
I have now decided that rimless is the answer. A bit severe, but the only thing that can go wrong with the frame is that you might have chosen the wrong colour. If the lenses are the wrong shape, it's not too horrendous if bought online. I have recently been pleased with rimless Lindberg combos from
http://rxeyewearonline.com/, in Florida.
Hi, I ordered from Zenni optical...the glasses I got were only a few pounds each...did it for more of a laugh because there was a bright red pair in amongst the ones I got!;) I also didn't order them all at the same time...I am more than happy with them but when I get a pair that I like then I tend to just wear them all the time!
My lenses are quite thick too, never thought about rimless before..quite posh eh?
Their glasses prices start at $8 (american firm)...thats why I ordered!:rotfl: Their delivery wasn't too bad either, customer service was superb! Its got to be said that if I ordered more metal ones that I could bend a wee bit to fit I would have been happier but I went abit wacky and ordered all sorts of coloured plastic ones!!:oYou may walk and you may run

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I'm not sure what my pupil distance is as I have a divergent squint in my right eye so I'm assuming my pupil distance would be different to the "norm".lol.
I'll try and find out from my optician.

Sounds like Zenni is a fun site. I can't wear most plastic frames, being mainly relegated to the kids section of stores due to a having a narrow face. One optician helpfully informed me that my eyes are too close together! Tried a nice shade of light red plastic frames at Boots, free to kids on the nhs, but £75 for anybody else. No wonder they are having a sale!
There is some really cool glasses in the kids section though, my daughter was begging me to get her glasses!!:D With plastic frames I find them very easy to fall of my face...maybe its just my odd shaped head!!;) The optician told me that with my prescription I was better with plastic???? So the lense thickness doesn't show so much.
My prescription is..right: sph -375 cyl -025 axis 90
left: sph -400 and there is a big line through the rest????
Sorry if I've copied that down wrong but thats how they wrote it. The optician says I should start thining the lenses if they get worse but for 4 years its stayed the same...got to see them again in August! You may walk and you may run
