I have been doing this for a couple of years through Plan UK. Go here http://www.plan-uk.org/ for their website - theres a link to become a sponsor on the home page. I started with a child in Guinea Bisseau who moved to Gambia and out of the scheme, so now I sponsor a girl in Togo. You get photos of the kids and a general introduction. I think its a great way to feel directly involved with a charity. I think the minimum contribution is £12 a month, which means a hell of a lot to some of the poorest places on earth, I don't think you will regret it.

I have been doing this for about 10 years with Tearfund. I sponsor a girl who lives in Africa, I pay £15 a month to help with her education and we regularly exchange letters and photographs. Sending parcels is discouraged as some children would get more than others, but usually I pop some stickers or something small in with my letter.:o In September an extra £7 is debited from our account, to pay for a Christmas present that is appropriate for her circumstances.
I agree with Hugh, you won't regret it.
