do you think all government communication posts will run a full CRB check? so a drunken verbal dispute from many years ago will effectively prevent me from working there?
What's it going to be, eh?

I applied for a job at GCHQ as an intelligence analyst about 5 years ago, and got through to the interview stage.
They required information on myself, parents and siblings for their security checks, so they must be quite detailed .
I don't know if this differs for different vacancies, or has changed in the past few years.0 -
I understood a CRB check was for work related to children and vulnerable adults, however, from personal experience of working for a Government body in a sensitive organisation, an Police check will very likely be undertaken.
However, I had a face-to-face interview at home, with my then husband, to verify who I was & I daresay you could explain any concerns you may have then?0 -
It won't be a "CRB" check. Depending on the level and frequency of access you will have to restricted/secret/top secret information, you will either need Enhanced Baseline, (EBS)+Counter-terrorism (CTC), SC (security clearance) or DV (developed vetting) clearance. EBS will check financial records (any debt is bad, mmkay), records of your mother+father+their partners, references from previous employers from the past 3 to 5 years and friend(s). You must tell them about any cautions/warnings/dealings with police/anything you did - drug use, anything illegal your friends/family do/have done, any espionage you've been involved in, etc. SC is for occasional access to secret info and goes into more depth. DV involves some interviews and goes into *lot* more depth. Basically, for all the clearance levels they want to be able to trust you and they need to know whether you could be subject to pressure from anyone, i.e. blackmail.0

thanks for replies, think this particular career path isn't for me. Its a real shame I have to rule out a lot of police, educational and security positions simply for one moment of drink fuelled madness as youngster.
stazi- im not sure y i need to tell the world about my debts, im taking that out. What's it going to be, eh?0 -
Not all employers who do CRB checks will rule you unsuitable because of one moment of drink fuelled madness as a youngster. Yes, you will always have to declare it, but as long as neither that nor anything else come as a surprise when the check comes back, an employer should look at it and consider whether that makes you unsuitable for working in their field.
If ANY conviction made people unemployable in those fields, we would soon run out of workers in certain areas. What is it these days, 30% of young men have a conviction or caution?
Many youth workers do not have a completely clean sheet, likewise many social workers.
I don't know what checks GCHQ run, but you could always ask whether your debts or your record make you automatically unsuitable. The debts may well be a problem, because that does leave you open to 'persuasion', but you can't be blackmailed about something you're up front and honest about!Signature removed for peace of mind0
