Extended warranty - is this the norm?

Options
Hi

Had a query, was looking at getting a extending warranty for my washing machine. I know alot of people say to put the money in a seperate account and if it goes wrong then buy one yourself, but I bought a top of the range washing price for a third of the price due to a powerhouse closing down sale so I wouldnt get it again at such a price.

My query was I got a price of £165 for 4 years from domgen, this covers unlimited repairs, call outs, parts and accidental damage (alot of other places I tried didnt offer accidental damage), however if something was to go wrong with my washing machine and it needed to be replaced then my 4 year extended cover would end immediately regardless of the time left. Is this normal for most companies?

Im totally confused and baffled, am I the only one this seems unfair to?

No that does not sound reasonable to me. Sounds like a waste of money to me. Let's face it, if it is top of the range chances are it won't go wrong. I have never taken out a warranty on anything, never regretted that decision and my savings must be 4 figures by now!

I think my main worry is I have a baby and shes always prodding at it. Also not to mention her tiny socks etc which may get swallowed up. Just for my piece of mind to.

  • Baby A - I'd forget the warranty.

You said you got a top of the range one for a third of the norm price:

A - It will NOT eat bub's socks,
B - Just make sure no toys are inside when you start a wash (my daughter has a habit of putting things in if I leave the door open!!) It won't break by prodding buttons...
C - If it is going to go wrong, it will in the first year (and you have the normal warranty for this) Even if your local powerhouse store is closing, the company will still uphold the warranty - in fact, it's with the manufacturer of the machine anyhow!
D - You saved a load of cash on the original deal, and if you save also the 165 quid from the warranty, if worst come to worst, you have enough to buy a new machine...

Peace of mind - knowing you have bought a decent machine in the first place, saved loads by doing a deal, got a years warranty, and saved 165 quid by not buying a flawed extended warranty....

Take a look at https://www.warrantydirect.co.uk. Cover starts at £13.91 a year for new appliances and they also do a multi appliance policy from £9.75 a month for 3 items. Best idea is to get cover after the first year manufacturers warranty is up so that you are not paying twice. :j

I have TV, video recorder, two laptops, HI FI, mobile phone, phone fax and what not, and never bought extended warranties. Like feival, my savings on this must be in the 4 figures.

There is one exception however, and that is for the first laptop which I bought in April 2000. I did accept a 5 year warranty on it, as it was so essential for my work.

You know what? I have had all this stuff for years and nothing has ever gone wrong. I was beginning to regret the warranty on the laptop when something began to go wrong with the hard-drive. This was in February this year, so almost at the end of the warranty period! - Dug out the details and got the new hard-drive replaced for free. Phew!

I have not been inspired to do the same with the new laptop, and I'm sure my intuition is right this time, too.
