Thanks Setmefree, I did manage to 'pull one off' from another thread and this is ready to be sent. It doesn't though make any reference to the fact that they still continue to ask me to phone them, despite me saying that I'M DEAF!!. x

TBH I think they don't believe people whatever you say they just repeat the same rubbish. Halifax phoned DH in hospital to check he was there even demanading the nurses put him on the phone. That was the point I changed from being a victim into a fully fledged DFW.Barclaycard 3800

Yes, and quite right too!
The more I think about this blatent discrimination, the more I feel determined to do something about it - I've spent most of my adult life dealing with 'twonks' who THINK that because I'm deaf, I'm stupid!!. .
Mobile just beeped with a txt mesage saying , "Hi, can you please telephone 01274 xxxxxxx to discuss your outstanding debt" - that just about does it.
I'm off for a little cry now, cos this stuff can sometimes get to me. xOpinions are like bottom holes, we all have one

You know I'd be really tempted to call them... I know you're deaf that;s kinda why it'd be fun...
Call the number and when they have picked up say who you are and state you're deaf and they have to shout... Just keep telling them to shout louder as you still can't hear them... Eventually state that if they aren't willing to speak to you so you can hear them then really you don't have to time to waste in speaking to them either... and hang up...
Yes I'm in an evil mood againDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Yes, and as much as I'd truly love to do this, I can't even hear when they pick up the phone, so the chances are I'd be gibbering on to some ruddy recorded message whilst waiting in a long flaming queue!. lol.
Although it might be fun .!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xOpinions are like bottom holes, we all have one

As a deaf person I really dont see the problem here? If you are unable to communicate by telephone, then either ask someone to do so for you or get the right equipment ie minicom/screenphone and use that! If you can't do either then just keep using letters, and leave it at that.
I find your attitude oh i cant use a telephone very discriminating to other deaf people who do manage it!:j Debt-Free-Wannabe! :jDeclutter/Ebay/Savings0 -
Runnybabbit wrote: » Hi All, I am hoping someone can help me with this dilema,
I recently sent a 3rd letter to Metropolitan Collection Services offering 50% in F&F Settlement of my debt. In that letter I pointed out that because I am deaf I was unable to contact them via telephone.
I have received a letter back today saying that my offer was NOT acceptable to their clients, and I need to TELEPHONE them so that we can come to some arrangement !
For gods sake, which bit of I AM DEAF do they not understand  and they have made no referral whatsoever to my disability.
I need to send reply to this letter, sooner rather than later, but I am at a loss as to what wording to use, since they seem to ignore anything that I write. I am desperate for some help guys, perhaps anyone has any suggestions or indeed is aware of the Law where disability is concerned. Babbit x
What about collecting all the information together and then going down to visit your MP the next time s/he has a constituents' surgery? Nothing like a letter from the top to encourage a company to put its brain into gear!0 -

That's all very well, but how on earth are you supposed to communicate with someone who doesn't want to listen apart from bullying you on the phone?
You mention about minicom/screenphone, I've never been offered that service and since I am in debt I am NOT in a position to buy one!
I am sorry you find my attitude very discriminating to other deaf people, your the first person to ever say that in over 21 years!. and I am pleased that you can manage to use the phone, which is more than can be said for alot of deaf people.Opinions are like bottom holes, we all have one

I think you are missing the point MiniLauraRocks. Firstly a 3rd party can't speak to the DCA becuase of data protection issues. Secondly they OP wrote to the DCA asked for everything to be in writing because she is unable to use the telephone. The DCA ignored this and sent a please call us to discuss letter. The OP then followed that up with a letter advising that the reason she cannot use the telephone is because of her disability and writing is the only option for her. She then continued her letter with the points that she needed clarified and the DCA once again replied with please call us and discuss.
As the OP has stated she does have the availible equipment in her work but not in her home.
Surely the problem is that the company in question is refusing to communicate in writting. If the company had responded to the OP letter answering her questions then there was no problem the fact that they are still refusing even although they are aware that calling is not an option for her specifically that is now the problem.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -
my point is you are complaining of discrimination by DCA - they would be if they were refusing to accept a call from another person on your behalf or refusing to speak to you through the Typetalk service.
Its very possible to get help in buying the equipment through social services/charities or using DLA money so being in debt has no reflection in being unable to purchase technology.
I also believe im not unusual in being able to phone people as a deaf person using the right equipment. Its very patronising to say "which is more than can be said for alot of deaf people" making out they are unable to do this!
Lilac Pixie: My point is this post gives off the disctinct impression of a deaf person being unable to do something thus adding to barriers/perceptions of deaf people - OP is WRONG to say that being deaf makes a person unable to use a telephone! I'm just trying to point this out as I feel slighted by this statement - it is possible for deaf people to access equipment to allow them to do this!:j Debt-Free-Wannabe! :jDeclutter/Ebay/Savings0
