new girl, bit complicated old debit ...please help

hi i am new and have read a lot of the posts and i am wondering if any of the advice can work for me.

i had a few mail order accounts and credit cards a few years ago but after having to move 5 times in 18 months i lost track of a few of them.
over the last few years one by one i have had debit letters through my letter box from collection agencys - nationwide collection services ltd, cobolt.
as soon as i have rec these i have called tham and asked about the debit and arranged the best i can either monthly payments or dd - a cannot remember which ones but a couple of these when asked whet the debit was they just said mail order debit and could not give me any other info when i asked how i knew the debit was mine the asked my name and they said it was in my name , i am a scared of any trouble so i agreed and started paying the debit.

today i got my credit details from equifax and it looks wrong, with three from grattan - i only had one account ,
two from kings hill - i cannot remember even getting a letter from them
and a default one from Shop Direct Financial Svcs Ltd for a mail order debit?? all of which show money outstanding and defaulted.
what can i do - i have read that some people can send letters to the companys to ask if they have credit agreement , but can i do that if i am paying them and should i stop paying , i dont want to make things any worse.
but i do know i have not had 5 mail order accounts and 4 credit cards as is showing on my equifax file

please help pinktails

  • Welcome pinktails,
Some companies issue more than one catalogue eg Peter Craig is a part of the Littlewoods family and so on.
You say that you have moved a lot over the last 18 months but surely you would know if you had ordered goods either from catalogues, mail order, magazines or even the telly etc.
Next time someone contacts you ask them politely to put the request in writing and ask them to put full details of the debts in their letter.
Although I am no solicitor I do think that the suggestion that if catalogue companies cannot enforce a debt without a signature is a red herring - do you think the big catalogue firms are worried about this? Have any changed the way they conduct their business? In short the answer is no.They could imply that a contract exists by proving that you ordered the goods and acceptance of delivery and one repayment IMO constitues a contract.
Sit down, try to think clearly and try matching the requests for money with companies you have dealt with and take it from there.

  • thanks for your reply
i do know which debits i have or had
i had a gratan account and a littlewoods account
the littlewoods one i am paying and the gratan one i am sure i have paid, but i only had on and equifax is holding 3in grattans name??
two loans from black horse fixed rate and a hire agreement, one is paid off (although still showing as outstanding and default. the other i am paying via dd both payed off or paying through a collection agency
i did have a barclay card which i am paying of through a collection agency
a monument card which i am paying off direct.
and thats it,, i dont understand why there are so many credit agreements showing on equifax.

does anyone know, if a collection company who have bought the debit cannot contact me and sell my debit on again could still have the details on my file - thiis could answer why their are so many.
also i did ask these companys over the phone what the bill was for and on a few occotions they just said mail order debit, that it was in my name and i should start payment as soon as possible before further action taken. so i agreed.
i have read a lot of the posts here and i am sure that they are saying that if the company you owe do not have a signed credit agreement that they can provide you with under some act ( sorry i am not very clear on these things) that they can not enforse the debit,
can somebody let me know if this is correct or am i reading the posts wrong,
aslo has any one heard of kings hill collecton ageny , they are on my file and i have never even heard of them.

    thankyou for your help

Indeed this could be the reason which is why it is important for you to get it clear in your head who the original debt was with before you agree to anything or anyone.
