Ex-Housemate does't pay debts.

For the past year I have been living in a shared student house. Our contract expires at the end of June 2008. One of our housemates finished his course at the end of May and left the house, promising that he will pay June's rent and his share of the bills for the period he was living in the house. You can probably predict where this is going...
For the past three weeks he hasn't been replying to e-mails, text messages or picking up the phone. We sent a text threatening legal action, but haven't received any reply yet. He is very well known in our university community (he was involved with politics in our guild of students) and we didn't think he would not pay at the end. He owes us around £450 in rent and bills.
Is there anything we can do? It would be ideal if we could somehow find his parent's address and contact them about this issue. We have met them and they seemed like ok people. But thanks to the data protection act it will be impossible.
I read a couple of other similar posts and the small claims court was mentioned. Is it worth it to go to court for £450?
