husband in pain after scale and polish, any advice?

hi, I hope i'm posting this in the right place!
My husband went to the dentist last friday to have an infected back molar extracted (had been on antibiotics the previous week) and to have a scale and polish. Now its 5 days later and he's in pain! ,not I might add from the extraction thats healing nicley and no pain at all. Its in the gums where he had the scale and polish, they feel very tender and slightly swollen and he says a couple of his teeth feel loose. The thing is should he go back to the dentist as possibly the infection from the 'bad' tooth has not cleared fully and has spread or should he wait it out abit longer? if so is there anything he can do to help his poor sore gums? (in fact he has been taking paramol for the pain and to get through his working day)
any advice is very much appreciated!

just to add we see the dentist x2 a year for a checkup and scale and polish but this is the first time he's had problems after.

which did he have first, the scale and polish or the extraction? a lot of people suffer pain or sensitivity after a scale and polish esp. if theres been a big build up. im sure t.s. or someone can explain it better than me

the dentist injected the site to numb the area, whilst he was waiting for that to kick in, he did the scale and polish, then extracted the tooth.
hopefully hubby is just suffering from man pain and it will settle, we go away in 3weeks and I don't want him suffering whilst we are away. (I had a tooth abcess last year on holiday, which totally ruined our family hol and cost me £80 in various pills and mouthwash)

This can really only be answered by the dentist. Go back and let him look at it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
