Hi everyone
I am new to the forum. I have been a subscriber to the MSE mails for sometime although admittidly have not read many of the emails - may not be in the situation i am if a had paid more attention?! -
My lightbulb moment came last week when my storecard was rejected. This was a worry as i had good credit on this card nothing outstanding, when i called the company i was told to call Equifax, so now i think i have been declared bankrupt??!! - is it possible for them to do this without your knowledge?! I have been in debt a long time and at one point had control of it but various events caused me to loose my grip and bury my head in the sand. I haven't a clue how much i owe exactly but i reckon its about 20k. I am working on finding out. I'm not sure wether to contact Equifax - but am worried about outside agencies contacting me or would it be better to call the companies i owe money to and finding out from them? When i have found out the real amount i shall post the inventory on here.
Because i am self employed my pay can vary from week to week but i never earn less than £100 a week. May sound alot but its not really as alot of it goes on my car food and rent. so leaving little to pay any debt off. It may sound stupid but ifanone has any ideas or advice on my logical route then please let me know, all advice is welcome.

I would have thought you would have received letters etc if someone were to make you bankrupt

Get a copy of your credit report, if you sign up for one of the free trials it won't cost you anything and you can see if there is anything untoward on it. I got mine online from Equifax and no outside agencies contacted me!
You should alsop call one of the debt management charities, CCCS or Nationaldebtline or someone, they can advise on the best way forward for you.

You can request a copy of your report from Equifax which will show why that particular company turned you down. There are two other credit agencies too.
I doubt you have been made bankrupt but what could have happened is your credit limit could have been reduced or a payment not reached them.
What is more worrying is that you have no idea what you owe, so a think a good session sitting down listing your income and what you spend, and finding all your latest statements etc and adding up what you owe to companies will give your lightbulb a true glow to see what situation you are in.0 -
It's very rare (though not unheard of) for a creditor to petition for bankruptcy as they have to pay high fees to do this and are not guaranteed to receive anything back!
The ones that have been known to do this are HMRC, Amex and some local Councils (council tax):hello:Save a little money each month and at the end of the year you’ll be surprised at how little you have.An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind0
