Funding for HGV/LGV training?

Is it really worth training to be an LGV driver at the moment anyway?
My OH has been a driver for around 12 years and has just been made redundant along with another 64 people. He is lucky to have found another job to go to - only a small handful of his co-workers have. However it is on less money and he will be working longer hours.
Anyway he now gets paid around the same as he did 12 years ago - just £7.50 an hour for the responsibility of driving a huge lorry with a valuable load. Maybe in other parts of the country the rate is better but it is still not an easy way to make a living!
