At present contributions to Unison do not attract tax relief - the conditions for tax relief to apply are that you pay your union fees as a statutory condition of your employment(eg you cannot get out of it) or that the fees are paid to a body to which the subscription is relevant to your employment. Usually it is not statutory to be in the Union and it is considered that membership is not essential to you doing your job. There is talk that this may be changed in the 2006 finance bill.I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes0 -
Can anyone think of a reason why Personal Tax Services thought that there was a strong possibility they could get me a tax rebate. For Information I'm not anyone of the following:
1) over 65
2) blind
3) don't pay maintenance
4) don't have a loan/wear a uniform
5) I did pay a subscription to the AAT last year
Got this off the inland revenue sitw:
You can claim an allowance for
* all the payments you have to make under your pension scheme to provide benefits for widows and orphans unless this allowance is given automatically by your employer
nothing on my P60
* half the part of your trade union subscription that covers superannuation, life assurance or funeral benefits
not sure if this applys
* the flat rate allowance for the job agreed by the union – you do not have to be a member
or this
* annual subscriptions to professional bodies – these must be connected with your job and the professional body must be recognised by the Inland Revenue.
Like I said above I did pay a subscription to the AAT last year
Could my P60 just be wrong because they're estimates. Sorry this is a bit long but I want to get my facts straight before I write to the tax office0 -
You may be able to claim releif on your subscriptions to the AAT. Not entirely sure aht you mean about your P60 being wrong.
None of the stuff mentioned will really show on a P60.
Some of the other stuff will only apply if you are a higher rate taxpayer.0 -
Do you mean your P11D/P9D ?
Do you earn more than £8,500 pa?
Do you receive benefits? If so, just list the benefits and we may be able to help you.

The AAT membership is a tax deductible subscription against any relevant employment.
'List 3' which shows the organisations which are eligible for relief is here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/list3/list3.htm

'Not entirely sure what you mean about your P60 being wrong.'
was browsing a personal taxation site, when I put in details from my P60 they said there was a strong possibility of a rebate so I put 2+2 together and obviously got 44.
'I'm still not sure why these companies keep saying there's is a strong possibility of a rebate, so I don't know what to write to the Inland Revenue.
'Some of the other stuff will only apply if you are a higher rate taxpayer'
I'm not
'Do you mean your P11D/P9D ?'
What are they? I only know about P60's and P45's
Do you earn more than £8,500 pa?
yes
Do you receive benefits? If so, just list the benefits and we may be able to help you.

What the website you used probably means is that you weren't on the standard cumulative tax code. You were probably on a Week/Month1 code, or had some deductions in your code. It doesn't mean your P60 is wrong though.

Have a look at the booklet Understanding your Tax Code. It has a number of allowances that you might qualify for.0
