Too much bread?

Hi,
I make my own bread and am currently making 2 x 2lb loaves a day. This is for a family of three adult males, one 15 year old girl and, of course, me
I never really thought this was excessive, as the three males (DH and 2DS) all have 'hearty' appetites and also take packed lunches to work. However, when speaking with a friend today she seemed genuinely shocked at the bread consumption in this house:eek:
BTW I don't mind baking everyday as it only takes me and Mr Kenwood a few minutes.
I just wondered if there was anyone else whose family consumed similar amounts in a day or is it just my lot?
Anni

Who is anyone else to judge what you or your folks eat? Even if you all were overweight (and I'm assuming you're not!!!), that's still none of her business!0

Hi Annafranakapan, I agree with Plum Pie, nobodies business how much bread you consume! I am sure your family all appreciate the scrummy bread you give them, lucky family!!! and if you add up all the pennies (or even pounds these days) that you save, they should be down on their knees giving thanks for your efforts!! Just as a matter of interest, do you do a variety of breads, or stick with one flavour? Keep baking, I say0

PS I remember my lot (DS DD OH ) consumung a loaf along with the jar of jam I just made, before I got downstairs to put the kettle on !!!0

If alll 5 of you are having toast in the morning and 4 of you taking sandwiches for lunch than you are indeed right on target with the bread consumption.;)0

well if thats too much then OH and i are stuffed, 1 2lb loaf is gone in a day if we have toast and lunch (he's a hungry man)Nonny mouse and Proud!!
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience!!

Thank You :T for all your replies. I'd never questioned how much bread we eat as a household but it was just the look of horror on this woman's face that made me think 'oo'er' for a moment

Anyway, our consumption of bread will continue unchanged
Powershopper: I don't generally make a variety of breads for daily use. I'm afraid it's white bread one day and wholemeal the next - I really do look on it as being our 'daily bread' (if you see what I mean). I can whip these up in minutes with my eyes shut.

Good bread can be the basis of so many meals ,so no the amount you use is not excessive.Maybe she was an old Atkins diet convert who still has a fear of carbs0

If you were having two loaves of shop bought chorleywood process bread, then it would definitely be too much - it would probably have adversely affected your health by now.
But there is a world of difference between traditionally made bread and chorleywood. You just keep on munching, anni!

FWIW there are some old figures here:
http://www.fabflour.co.uk/content/1/32/changing-fortunes-for-household-bread-consumption.html
which seem to indicate that average consumption is around about 1 loaf per person per week (as compared to your 2.8).

We get through one 2lb loaf a day for 2 adults and 2 small children - so I would say that's about the same as you. We all have sandwiches for lunch and sometimes toast for breakfast. i've never really thought about it before... but I agree good quality bread ( I make my own too) is very healthy. I never bought the atkins idea - just couldn't see how eating all that meat could be better for you than a moderate amount of both meat and carbs, not too mention how unsustainable for the planet....0
