people post lots of times because they have been a member of MSE for a number of years and are an active part of the community - maybe just on DFW but maybe also on other boards also - have a look at the Arms - there are some with 20,000+ posts on there!

the strange flashing things are called emoticons or 'smileys' and are there to represent emotions which may not be conveyed by the flat writing on a screen. Without them comments can be take out of context or maybe a joke taken as a serious thing being said. If we were out on the street I could wink at you if I were joking with you, but on here I would go or if I were confused I would shrug my shoulders but online I go to show the same thing.
