Value potatoes - a false economy?

I've bought a few bags of Tesco Value potatoes now, and have had no problems (so far
) Haven't spotted the Sainsburys equivalent before so will be on the lookout for them.
I guess I'm a potato phillistine then, as I always tend to "jazz" my potatoes up e.g. herbs and spices when making HM wedges/oven chips, so guess I don't really notice if the potatoes are bland!DFW no.554 - Proud to be dealing with my debts :TDAVID TENNANT CAN PROBE ME WITH HIS SONIC SCREWDRIVER ANYTIME...:AFLYING THE FLAG FOR THE CAMBRIDGE BOOTS TARTS :happyhear0 -
Hootie. I've bought value potatoes from Tesco and Sainsbury, and I've never had any problems other than the odd one in the bag being too black to use.
I'd have taken them back....they are supposed to be fit for purpose. A potatoes purpose is to be edible....

Its the time of year. The new season potatoes have not fully come on stream yet, so we are left with the end of last years crop. Thats why they are called new potatoes. This happens every year around this time but should get better soon.0

Hello!
I remember reading somewhere that potatoes and onions should never be stored together as they set each other off sprouting!
I've recently converted to Tesco Value Spuds. It's true that occasionally I've had to cut out the odd black bit, but on the whole I've found them to be very good, especially sprayed with olive oil and baked in the oven!

Have you got the recipe for oven chips as I confess to buying them ready made but would much prefer to make them myself as they are so expensive now
Thanks

Hi Karen
ashbart pretty much covered it, I don't put spices or anything on mine (fussy children  ) and I chop and change how thick or thin I make the chips. I always leave the skin on. I also use the spray olive oil and give them a coating while cold and then bung them in the oven at about 200C until I feel they are done.
I never blanch if doing fresh potatoes but if freezing them I probably would - just for 5 mins or so.
I had to do them all at once - potatoes always start sprouting quickly for me, even though I keep them in a cool dark place!
Good luck with the chips

That's interesting. I do store potatoes in a cotton bag (from Betterware) and have recently started putting the onions in with them. I've definitely noticed potatoes sprouting more, but not the onions.
will keep them separate from now on.
I have had a 5kg bag of "normal" white potatoes delivered today, so will see what they are like. I am also going to start visiting the local farm shop :cheesy:0 -
I always buy the Sainsburys basics potatoes, we've eaten many bags of them over the years, and I find them very good quality. I like them better than some of the more expensive bags we've had.0

I always buy from the local farmshop. They always ask at this time of year will you eat that number of spuds in a short time, if you order a sack or 1/2 sack of spuds as they don't last at the mo. I got a 1/2 sack of local grown wilja spuds (don't see them much in the supermarket) for £2. Also got 6 large free range eggs for £1.
Our local farm shop also does local cheeses and icecream and best of all farm butter mmmmmmm.
Defo better than the F&v in any local supermarket.
