    Interesting point.

    My daughter-in-law's first marriage broke up when they were in negative equity. He did a bunk and in order to get him off the mortgage and secure their daughter's future she had to take out a loan to pay the original mortgage off and remortgage in her own name.

    She is now married to my son and they are still struggling with the debt.

    The ex walked away scott free. But she had to get it sorted out because he was walking into the house day and night as if he owned the place.... which, of course, he did...

    If the girl has moved out & wont even speak to her ex, then does the girl 'who apparantly has inherited money & a house' think that her ex-boyfriend will have entitlement to half of her inheritance????? I'd be offering the girl to keep her house & say boys deal is to keep the house that was theirs.

    If they were married, that would be a reasonable suggestion.

    However, where there is no marriage/civil partnership, an individual's sole assets remain in their sole ownership, and joint assets are split according to the shares they are held in (which in the case of a house held as 'joint tenants' is equally, unless some other division of shares can be agreed upon, which seems unlikely in this case)

  • I'm not sure I am writing this in the right place so my apologies if it isnt where it should be. Anyway its on a similar subject. I lived with my girlfriend for 6 years and owned a house before I met her. She moved in with me owing lots of money and I paid it all off ! We then bought a new house and used all the money from my house as the deposit and foolishly i never got that logged. She left me a year ago and has now said she wants 50% share of the property. She barely worked whilst we were together and my bank statements would show she barely contributed. I have 3 children that lived with us that I hoped to leave the money from the house to but now i am receiving solicitors letters asking how I will pay her the 50% share. Is she really entitled to this ?? She is about to start proceedings according to the last letter I got. She has paid nothing since she left a year ago and I would really struggle to pay a solicitor. I feel I've been a fool but wondered if there is anything I can do ? Any help would be appreciated.
