Letter from debt collectors about debt I don't owe - help!

This morning I have received a letter from Lowell debt collection agency demanding repayment for a debt of £499.44.
I don't owe them any money and have never dealt with the company they claim I owe the debt to...(1st Credit).
So could some of you knowledgable people tell me what to do next please as I certainly don't want black listing for a debt which is'nt mine...and all the worry and hassle that goes with it.
Thank you in advance

1st Credit is another Debt Collection Agency (DCA).
Do you have any outstanding debts that may have been passed to a DCA? Even really old ones?Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

No debts at all.
I did have three catalouge debts (all dealt with Moorcroft) but paid them all up eight years ago. I paid up every last penny. So I am 100% it's not a debt I owe.

could you ring them and ask what the debt is for as you know nothing of it?0

Not normally a good idea to ring Lowells.
They are bullying bunch of imbeciles, who will try to get you to pay a debt whether it is yours or not. "Pond life" are advanced organisms compared to them.:rolleyes:Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I have rang them and they have said they will look into it but it hasn't made me feel at ease at all. The woman on the phone implied I must have forgotten about the debt as it is seven years old but I know I don't owe it.
Bloody debt collection agencies!!!!0 -
This letter is suggested by National Debtline if a DCA is chasing you for a debt you don't know:

If they persist in trying to claim a debt that would have had a credit agreement, then this letter/factsheet may also be useful:

In that case, even if it was yours then it would probably be "Statute Barred" under the Limitations act.

They are on to a loser by the looks of it.
It's either not yours, or probably legally unenforceable.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
