Anybody else's card being declined everywhere? (21 June 2008)

Was just in Asda at the checkout where I put my pin in and it said it was OK, then it told me that the transaction was declined. I checked my balance and I had more than enough money. So I went to the cash machine outside to get cash to pay, but that said that the service was unavailable. A little bit annoyed with this I rang Abbey who told me that it was a problem with a system and it affected a lot of people?

What do I do in a situation like this and how will I know when I can use my card again?

Cheers.

  • Not a lot you can do. They're aware of the issue so I'd suggest either going into a branch to withdraw money or using a different card assuming you've got more than 1...

Make sure you have another card with another bank incase of an emergency like today.
If you have say an Abbey Visa card get a Mastercard from another bank to 'balance' things out.

Abbey aren't the only bank that have been affected by this. Most banks have had the same problems. The problem has affected both Visa and Mastercards. Even using an ATM has been like getting blood out of a stone. Halifax was one of the lucky ones I believe.
