if your name is not on a bill then you are not liable to pay it to the company you are however to pay to the person paying as long as there is an agreement to pay and also get yourself recipts for money you give for bills as if you had a falling out then they could go to court to demand money you have already paid.

I have Internet banking statements; would they not count as a receipt to some extent...?

they would to an extent but the person you are paying could say it was a loan repayment not a payment for bills and then it would be up to you to prove they were for rent and bills.

As for the council tax bit it doesnt matter if you are not named on the bills as long as someone is on them and the bill is being paid then there should be no comeback to you.

Keep your rental agreements though so if the council tax people do ask why you haven't paid any council tax for how ever long you can say this is where you were and this is the person who was paying the bill.

You are doing nothing wrong (unless claiming for a single person discount) by not having your name on the bill my warning is for the future when you do get your own place or if your flatmates decide to be nasty.

This happened to me where I was living with a friend I was paying her rent and bills (I always paid by standing order and put the reference on rent and bills). She decided to be a dikc and took me to small claims court because i owed her all this money. Because i had kept everything ie bankstatements saying what the payment was for it was thrown out of court and she had to pay my 'fees' i charged her £40 for her troubles :p

So my advice to anyone sharing a place with friends is protect yourself against these things happening.

Ummm. Sharing a flat is a very grey area. Now it could be that the council tax has been transferred to the sole name of one of your flatmates. If so, I would be asking to see proof of this & also proof that it is being paid.

I would be very cautious here. Call the council & explain the set up & that you have moved in on X date. Ask them whose name the COMPLETE council tax bill is in. There can be more than one name OR the building could be split into seperate bills.

    You need more clarification here.
