Sky delivery charge

Sky are launching a nifty little device to allow you to listen to satellite radio stations all over the house. I think it's reasonably priced at £69.99. It's called a Sky Gnome.

Anyway... here's the problem:
Digital satellite system required. Compatible with all Sky Boxes. All prices inclusive of VAT and subject to change. Sky Gnome is currently not available in the ROI.
P&P: Unless otherwise stated, postage and packaging is £6.50 per Sky Gnome purchased for delivery in England, Wales, Scotland (excluding the Highlands and Islands). For Northern Island and the Scottish Highlands & Islands, postage and packaging is £13.99 per Sky Gnome.
Not sure where "Northern Island" is but assuming they mean Northern Ireland, I am cross at this delivery charge and have sent a complaint to them!

    Sky = rip off!
  • Well I used to purchase all my computer products at dabs, and suffered the "surcharge" to outlying areas!

    Initally this charge was a standard £5 in addition to the normal delivery charge based on the weight of the parcel.

    Now however the surcharge has been raised to £11.75 again on on top of the standard delivery charge. However the surcharge to ROI is £6.05 !!!

    So if I wanted a small item like a computer fan costing £3.00 by the time I added the standard delivery charge (£3.00) and the surcharge (£11.75) it would cost £17.75!!!! yet to ROI it would be £12.05 .

    I don't know how they calculate that but I always thought it would be more expensive to send to ROI rather than NI.

    Now my issue is how come some online retailers like play.com, amazon.co.uk, even argos etc use the one postage rate to all the UK, but others use these *increased* rates to "outlying areas". Is this a scam to get additional money? Who knows, but as far as I know it costs the same to post from Derry to Manchester as it does from Newcastle to Manchester. Maybe they use different delivery companies or something.

    What can we do about it? Nothing really, except try and shop around to get the best deal with a company that does not rip us off.

    We are always being ripped off over on postage charges over here. I recently fell foul of £20 P&P from Dabs (but it was still cheaper than buying locally). However when it failed I found that to return it using full insured guaranteed next morning delivery it cost £6.04 ... and that included the cost of a high quality jiffy bag to put it into. I sent a letter of complaint to Dabs but just got a standard answer saying that it would be passed to the relevant team for comment????
