Wax or varnish over matt water based paint?

I've painted some chairs with a matt water based paint. I know I should really have used an oil-base, but I preferred the chalky finish the water based paint gives. Does anybody know the best way to wax them or varnish them to protect the finish but retain the chalky look?

I've spent a good half hour online looking for the answer, but can't find it, so I'd be grateful for any advice from somebody who's actually done this.
