Quick question re. credit score

Hi all,
I hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting this off topic thread on this board! I'm interested in finding out what my credit score is. If I register with a site like Experian's and request my credit score/report will that somehow make my credit score worse? I don't know why it would, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that requesting credit scores can affect your rating somehow..?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
C

  • not sure of the answer on here maybe you'd be better off posting on the loans board as they are up on credit scores

The credit score you will get from experian or any of the credit reference agencies will be very different from those used by the banks and other comapnies. Each company has its own criteria for working out the credit score with a different weighting set to each part with regards what is more important. The CRA's i don't think take into account your salary so just because you pay off the minimum required each month may give you a good score with them, but the bank could see that you have an income of 10k but debts of 30k without including your mortgage so they may see you as a bad risk.

I got my credit score by paying an extra £6 (I think it was) but to be honest it was only a figure, I don't see that it was of much value.

You can go with the free trial of Experian which will give you details of all of your credit accounts- this I found to be much more useful and so far as I know, doesn't affect your credit rating.
  • I've just signed up with the free Experian credit report and should get my report in a few days. Thanks for the advice.
