  • Agree with Zaren999 I did in the end get an internal post outside my department that overall is much better and better pay scale than those I had applied for.

^ Well hang on, I never "threaten to leave"! I just make it clear that I'm going places, and that is usually recognised - the girl who originally employed me thought it was brilliant that I was so ambitious and kept going on about how the sky was the limit at my new company.

I don't think anyone can criticise my method - I've more than doubled my salary in the last 4 years and now have a CV that could get me almost anywhere (the company I work for and role I've played are internationally recognised).

I've literally blown everyone away with my performance here and made it clear that I'm more than happy to stay and continue working on the same path as long as there's room for me (i.e. no glass ceilings). And my boss is at least ambitious as me, meaning he has no fear of my own ambitiousness.
But your strategy has a sell by date. If you have been changing jobs annually then depending on sector, you might do well to get a couple of years in in one place and also get some recognition by way of a promotion from an employer you have stuck with. If you don't go down that road, you'll end up only able to change to progressively lower grade employers, I fear.

Hmm, well my thoughts are that they moved this guy sideways to bring back his confidence, to make or break him. I guess he's recovered from his troubles so they will give him a shot, though he doesn't sound like he wants it too much. Go for the interview and if you are turned down ask for feedback why. This will give you exactly what you need to progress further. I imagine they will give it to this guy on a trial and if he doesn't fit in the position will automatically come to you - someone they know can already do it. Just sounds like they are giving a loyal employee another chance. Hang tight and let us know how it goes.

Ooh or what if they have moved him in to sit with you to see how you get on together? Maybe they need two people to cover this big project?

There would be three people working on it from our area - the new higher band role, me (or my role) and a temp. Then there are various other people from across the business.

So yes, they may have done that, but still with only one promotion opportunity!

    That you know of...............
Stay positive, don't let it get you down, there's got to be a reasonable explanation. You just have to wait to hear it. And if there's not then get the hell out!!

If you really want the job, you apply for it, and if you're much the better candidate you'll get it; even if he has been invited to apply.

He has a ton more experience and service with the company than you; if he can do it, it's hardly suprising that they have given him the nod to go for it. Your manager may well be thinking of giving you experience of more responsibility; but if they've already got a suitable candidate for this role lined up, your manager may simply not have wanted to raise your hopes pointlessly with this role. They certainly won't stop you applying; which is different from advising you to apply.

It's true to say that employers do value length of service; the sweet cherries often go to those who have length of service, and understandably so; and you don't have a great deal yet.

Could be that as this is a big project the timeline may be more than two years.

This chap has been there decades, chances are he'll see it through.

You move every two years, the company can't guarantee you'll be there at the end.

To be honest if I was looking at your CV and you interviewed as you posted my biggest concern would be why you are still an employee and not running your own show
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

Well, the application's gone in - thanks to all those who got me motivated for it! After a pretty hectic day today, at 7pm I opened up the app and everything started pouring out...

Hopefully, by the time I get back from holiday (1 week starting tonight), there will be an interview booked and I can express myself to the management

To those who said "he's more likely to get it than you" - cheers, I already knew that.
