Gym Memberships - messing up direct debits

Hi
I have a slight problem, the local council gym that I have been a member of for 6 months+ has incorrectly set up my direct debit twice now and apparently 'lost' the paper work.
For a bit of background, I am on a corporate membership, and apparently had the first 3 months free due to a new incentive. They switched to a new computer system early in 2008 which seemed to create a lot of problems on people's accounts.
Obviously, its quite worrying that they have lost my information twice, but also they seem to not want take any responsibility for their mistake. Instead they have suggested that I have cancelled the direct debit which has never been set up on my account!
Does anyone know of any consumer law which helps protect the customer from being liable in these situations? Any advice appreciated!!
Sophie

Don't know but you should be able to write to bank and ask that if 2 direct debits going out to the same company for one to be cancelled (give the details of the amount/company). You might be able to see this online.0
