And I promise I have done searches, however...........!

This AVG malarky. That's the free one yeah? Is it an anti-virus and firewall?

I currently use Norton Internet Security, and to be honest I'm perfectly happy with it. But if AVG is just as good (and allegedly isn't as slowing on the machine) and it's free then it's worth a try. Right?

If it isn't a firewall aswell (look at me looking like I know what I'm talking about) what one should I use?

OK, next is about wireless routers. Should the model depend on who your internet is with, what spec you've got, neither, both?

Or do they all do the same thing?

Thanks.

AVG is worth a try but is not a firewall unless you pay for it.

Using AVG as virus protection and the microsoft firewall is fine for most people although there are decent free firewalls available too.

As for the router, most ISP's will supply one but it depends on the actual ISP as to whether you HAVE to use theirs or not. All routers do the same thing, some are quicker than others and some are wireless, some are wired and nearly all can be configured to work with any ISP.

Should have asked this before, but what's the link for AVG? I don't want to download some dodgy virus (oh the irony) :rotfl:

Is the microsoft one safe enough or do you reccommend another one?

Re routers, I'm currently with Tiscali but am gonna be with Sky in a few weeks. Will a general Belkin or whatever they are called do the job?

I'm with Sky, they supply a free netgear router worth about £80 and it's excellent and they also supply the full Mcafee security suite for nothing for your first year. It's more resource intensive than AVG and I've uninstalled it since but at least it's free !

OK now this is gonna be a dumb@ss question. :rotfl:

My new laptop arrives tomorrow. Currently my PC has a plug in broadband modem. Will that work with my laptop if I plug it in as I think it's only got a wireless modem?

Actually I'm not sure my desktop even has a modem anymore! :undecided

Yeah, go with the Windows one. It's no good if you have a spyware problem already, but if you're clean to begin with it's fine.
The free antispyware software is good, but you have to remember to use it regularly. Spybot is the best.

Yes, you will be able to plug in your new laptop without any problems then go wireless when you get Sky, you can continue to plug the desktop into the Sky router when you get that too or buy a wireless card for £5 to £10 to make the desktop wireless.
