Gym membership

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I thought it may help someone. I work in London and wanted to join a gym. Leaving aside the insurance related gym memberships (covered elsewhere on the site), the prices are all ridiculous (cheapest I found was about £55). However by joining the same gym (Fitness First) at a different location, I have got a membership for £35 which allows me to use any Fitness First club (including the one that would have cost me £55 per month). They have also confirmed that I don't need to use the home club more than any other club, so hopefully no hidden loopholes. Not sure if this is common practice for gyms, but if you want to join a gym in an expensive area, suggest you phone around and look at joining a cheaper club on this kind of basis.

You should check what sort of club the one in London is. They have 3 types - "Blue", "Platinum" and "Black Label"
Blue Reciprocal members can use any Blue club.
Platinum Reciprocal members can use any Blue or Platinum club.
Black Label Reciprocal members can use any Blue, Platinum or Black Label club.

If you join Pru-health and buy health insurance you get really cheap membership at certain gyms - then if you go more your rate goes down so eventually you pay nothing! My friend used to do this but i think the deal is still running . . . ;)

From memory, it's canons, LA fitness and Virgin. The virgin membership is slightty more expensive than the other two via pru health. If you have an old NUS card, maybe you could get away with a student rate. Some fitness first staff didn't check the date and just accepted it.

My local gym is offering June and July free on a 12 month offer. If I were to cancel the direct debit before the year is up would they chase me up?
I expect to move house before the end of the year anyway..
