Computer Won't Start Up

Options
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me.

For the past few days, my computer has been very tempermental in starting up. Firstly it hangs on the start screen - "Detecting devices...". It then goes to a black screen saying "Detecting Array...". When this first started, a few days ago, it stayed on this screen for a while, then came on normally. However, yesterday, it would not come on at all.

When it last came on, I ran a complete virus scan using AVG, which found nothing.

I don't know if this is relevent or not, but I recently installed Zango and Web Media Player. These are programs that supposedly let me watch TV online. But I was wary and uninstalled Zango immediatly. AVG flagged Web Media Player up as being a dangerous program when installing it, so this program was not even installed. Also, since this, when using the internet, lots of Pop-Unders appear, which I can not stop.

And advice would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

From first sight it would appear as if your hard drive is the problem. Have you heard any clicking noises or found it unusually long to access small files recently?

The big question, is there lots of important data there that you haven't backed up?

No, not heard any noises and speed has been same as always.

The data is not that important, so I wouldn't loose much anyway.

Ok well that's good news at least.. :)

Right.. so by the sounds of the things when it's trying to detect the boot device in the BIOS (Startup black screen prompt) it simply hangs...

Try inserting an official windows disk. It's a bootable disk. In theory your computer should recognise it and allow you to boot from it. If this happens then try doing it... just to see if it works..

If it does it shows your processor and RAM may not be to blame as its hanging when detecting the hard drive as a boot device.

A new hard-drive is dirt cheap and not too hard to put in.. if you know any teccys its a 10 min job and then installing windows again :)
