P45 salary? - Quick Question

Hello all,

I have a quick question (please feel free to move the post if this is in the wrong place).

I have been offered a new job that pays a lot more than what I'm currently earning (very big relief, I may be able to afford a deposit on a mortgage in five years after all). This problem is, as part of the negotiations, I might have exaggerated slightly (:o) when I told them what my current salary is in order to get more money.

Will my current salary appear on my P45? I don't think it would look too good if they find out I lied at the outset.

Thanks

H x

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think it does, just on your P60, which there's no reason to show them.
If it did show on the P45, you could always say you haven't received it yet & go emergency tax, I suppose. A bit of a pain, but would cover the "white lie"

It won't show your salary but will show earnings to date so would only have a couple of months on it. I doubt they would notice but you could always say if asked that it was a 1/4ly//annual bonus that made the difference. Also you may get backdated holiday pay on the last payslip so adding more.

    Good luck

Your taxable pay for the tax year to date will appear on your P45.

Since we are not that far into the tax year and depending on what you want you want to say, you could try:

    1. I quoted my salary to include a bonus that I usually get later in the tax year

    2. I quoted my salary excluding a salary sacrifice for (insert what you want) childcare vouchers

    3. I quoted my salary to include car allowance / regular petrol expenses that I get

    4. I quoted my salary based on an imminent pay rise that I know I am going to get

The list could go on. I like number 4 the best.

  • To take number 4 on further....

You could say "Well, that's what they offered me to stay"

  • have a P45 in my hand as I was reading this , it also says

if you do not want your new employer to know the details on the P45 you can send it directly to the tax office immediately with a letter saying so and also quoting your new employers name and address
The IR can make special arrangements but you may pay too much tax while it is sorted

In all reality only payroll will look at it and they are unlikey to ask HR if this is what you negotiated. I wouldn't worry.

Many thanks for all the responses. Looks as if I've timed the job change right for it to not be too much of an issue. I only exaggerated by £1,300 annually (thankfully the offer was a lot more). This could be a bonus I get at the end of the year, lol!
