I'm lazy and would just be making pea soup and mash. Ooh, sounds all right! What spices do you have? Any soy sauce? Pepper? Bovril/Marmite?

    Hi Littlechezza,

Yellow split peas make great soup and are good for padding out stews and casseroles.

For lots of potato ideas try these threads:

How many things can you do with potatoes.

    Mash, boring mash!!!

I have a variety of spices, yes I have some bovril and soy sauce, I didn't know if I could mix the 2 together and then add some spices to make it into a curry.

I don't wait for permission, I just chuck it in and see how it works out!

By the way, dried peas are dried so that they don't go off. They will be fine for absolutely ages yet, as they are dried.

    Hi Littlechezza

I would soak the split peas for a few hours, then wash them in a sieve, and cook for half an hour or so. Then, heat a small amount of veg oil in a large pan, add a good teaspoon of whole cumin seeds and one or two chopped green chillis. Cook for a minute then add a teaspoon of ground coriander, and a teaspoon of turmeric, and cook and stir for another minute. Then add your split peas and the cooking water, and some peeled, diced potatoes. Cook for about 30 mins, until the potatoes and peas are done. Serve with rice. Keeps well for 2-3 days in fridge and will freeze also.

Don't worry about the use by date on the split peas. They will keep for years - just might need a bit more soaking/cooking time if they are older. Hope you make something tasty.
