Interesting article published in Jan this year:
http://www.e4s.co.uk/news/articles/view/486/job-news-and-information/graduate/Average-pay-rise-increasesThe research, by Incomes Data Services (IDS), showed that average pay rises in the sector [private] are now at 4 per cent which is due to higher inflation.
Ken Mulkearn, editor of the IDS Pay Report, said: "While the jury is still out on the extent to which the credit crunch in finance will affect the rest of the economy, our initial look at January deals confirms the continued influence of high inflation on pay negotiations in the private sector."
Looks like there may be hope yet!
On the flip site, article published again in Jan this year:
http://www.careerbuilder.co.uk/UK/JobSeeker/CareerAdvice/ViewArticle.aspx?articleid=107&cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=d9b07e4840774f2191788d9ee4fb4fc4-267418369-wu-6&ns_siteid=ns_uk_g_average_pay_rise_2008According to the Global Compensation Planning Report, published by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, UK pay is projected to increase by 3.1% in 2008, compared with 2.9% in 2007.
For the average UK worker earning £31,290 per year, a 3.1% pay rise works out at only £80.83 extra per month - perhaps you should keep the champers on hold, for now at least.
But, these figures fall short of those in the rest of Europe where the average salary increase is 3.4%, as the UK braces itself for the widely predicted economic slowdown in 2008.
And one more, published March this year:
http://finance daily.co.uk/showNews.aspx?loadid=001028 (had to put the space in as these forums seem to block out the domain name 'finance daily' with ! symbols?!)Two days before the budget, a new report by price comparison site uSwitch.com reveals the average pay rise in the UK this year is only 3.4% against a 9% rise in bills.
A shocking 9 million of us are not getting a pay rise this year, a further 13 million will receive a pay rise below the RPI (4.2%) and over 5 million people will get a pay rise falling short of the CPI (2.2%) (Edit - these RPI / CPI figures are from March obviously!)Furthermore, 84% of public sector pay increases will fall below the RPI.0
